Try not to think about it too much. As others have said, the nursing/surgical staff and the anesthesiologists usually are good about sensing your needs and reacting appropriately. I think they are used to dealing with all types and I think they know that most people are nervous and apprehensive and they want to help you. Let them know how you are feeling.

The hardest part is waiting for them to start the anesthesia. After that, it is pretty much "a piece of cake" as others have said. Once that "happy juice" gets started, you will be surprised at how relaxed you are. I remember the last time, I just started laughing because the nurse was wrapping me up like a mummy. Not necessarily funny in real life, but I certainly found it amusing at the time. Of course, I didn't realize I was laughing out loud until the nurse said, "Oh, Dr. X must have started your 'happy juice' because you're all giggly." The last thing I remember before falling asleep was being mortified that a male surgical assistant had entered the OR and he might see my "girl parts" during surgery, although it didn't seem to bother me that my doctor was a male and the anesthesiologist was a male. After that, I woke up in the recovery room 2-1/2 hours later, but it seemed like mere minutes in my head.

Try not to worry too much about anesthesia. If you are open about your fears, I'm sure the anesthesiologist and staff will be able to help you out. Take care and hang in there!
