23 years old, epileptic, & discussing a hysterectomy.
Hello, everyone -
As the posts indicates, I'm twenty three and have been discussing a hysterctomy with my gynecologist for some time.
I have epilepsy and asthma as well as dysfunctional uterine bleeding, possibly PCOS, endo and complex cysts. I started experiencing severe pelvic pain, steady weight gain (70lbs in one year), edema and irregular bleeds (periods last three consecutive months w/bleeding every day) for two years. The doctors have just thrown various birth control at me and I'm really tired of it. As a woman with epilepsy, my seizure threshold is significantly lower when I'm on my period and makes all activities a game of Russian Roulette.
I believe that receiving a hysterctomy would have long term benefits for me - in all aspects of life: gynecologically, neurologically and emotionally. Two years of dealing with this without any plausible solution has really worn me down.
Note: I spent six years of my life practically confined to bed rest due to my epilepsy. I'm not really willing to allow that to happen again. Thus, I'm far more aggressive and proactive in this treatment.
I have read several forums where women with catamenial epilepsy were able to stop or a significantly reduce their anti-convulsants. And better yet, the seizures reduced and/or stopped altogether! This would be a dream for me, as I am taking three, and they have already noted some effect on my other major organs (primarily the kidneys).
Nevertheless, my family (specifically my mother who hasn't even hit menopause yet and she's 52) is really concerned how hormone replacement will grandly effect my health, what to expect in recovery and what women (who had a hysterectomy pre-menopause) believe were the benefits. If anyone could offer advice, guidance, etc. I would be greatly appreciative!
Thank you. Best wishes, Sara
