a question about insurance-please help me if you can.

i dont know where to put this, so if its in the wrong place i am sorry.

my husband is staring a new job on oct 1st. we get ins from the first day of employment. we have ins with his present employer and supposedly it ends the 29th of this month, or so this lady says. is it normal for ins to stop on the next to the last day of the month or will it go until the 30th? and am i going to need cobra for a day? and if i do, am i going to have to pay for a whole month? i have no idea what im doing and i feel sooooo stupid!!!

the reason im asking is because i went to the gyn last week and my dr is wanting to do a sono because he suspects endo (i know you cant tell endo from a sono) or adenomyosis and wants to rule out other things before he goes any further. i had an appointment this past friday but i cancelled it because i was scared about the ins not covering me. plus i have had severe dysplasia, had a cone and have had normal paps ever since. (is that going to be considered pre-existing?)

i am going to call and find out what the ins says about it. see if it is indeed the 30th and not the 29th. and i DO hope they say oh yes its the 30th.

anyways if anyone know what i should/need to do please help me. i just dont know what to do.

thanks sooo much!!

I would personally call the insurance company itself. When I found a job with benes, I called out ins agent and was able to cancel my previous ins with only a few days notice, however, each plan varies. I wouldn't think they would cancel it on that date, but you never know. Good luck with everything. It's hard enought to deal with those issues without the money entering into it!

I would definitely find out about when the old insurance ends and the new one begins. Even a lapse of one day can affect what is covered on the new plan depending on the laws in your particular area. You very well may need to COBRA to be sure there is no lapse at all so that nothing is exempt on the new plan. And ask specific questions regarding how pre-existing conditions are handled. In my particular state, there are no exemptions for pre-existing issues if the insurance is through an employer. But that is not the case in all states. In the state where I used to live, pre-existing conditions were not covered for one year with a new insurance plan provided by an employer.

I would suggest talking to the HR department of your DH's current employer, call the current insurance company personally, call the new insurance company personal, talk to the HR department of the new employer, and document everything! And double check to be sure that the new insurance plan will go into affect on the first day of employment. If there are any doubts at all about when the insurance will end and start and whether or not your pre-existing conditions will be covered by the new plan, go with COBRA until you have all the kinks worked out!

I hope you can figure everything out quickly!

Since endo is suspected, I also want to suggest tyring to see an endometriosis specialist if at all possible. You may also want to read through our Endometriosis Resources to learn all you can about endo.

Let us know how things go and in there! s
