hello! i am 28 years old and going to have a TAH/BSO on December 11th. I was just wondering if you all think that i will feel up to celebrating christmas at my inlaws (about 5 minutes from my home). i will not have to dress up or anything, but i really don't want to miss this. my kids are 4 and 6 years old and i don't want them to miss this family tradition. i so very much appreciate this website. it has been so informative.

Hi Mellymac,
You'll be two weeks post op by Christmas. Since it is only five minutes from home, you should be okay, as long as you remember that sitting is an activity that you want to limit to 15 to 20 minutes at a time. See if you can arrange to lie on the couch or in a recliner while you are there, and you shouldn't be lifting heavy gifts (over 10 lbs.) or helping with dinner preparations.
In the car, take your tummy pillow to place between your incision and the seat belt, and to help support your abdomen during sudden stops. You'll have to check with your doctor if you're planning on driving. I didn't drive until my third week, then just a short distance.
Best wishes on your upcoming surgery and lots of s,
Lisa

Just remember you're a Princess
I think you'll be fine as long as you pay attention to how you feel and not overdo. I wasn't doing any long distance travel when I was two weeks post-op, but a five minute drive is hardly more than going to your own living room! Sort of. You could even wear your Christmas pajamas. : (Just to remind people you're sick.)

You know what? I think having someone else handle Christmas for you this year is probably the best thing you could do! As it's family, you can excuse yourself to go and lie down on someone's bed for a nap whenever you want - AND - there will be plenty of adults around to handle the hyper-kids (Christmas does that to them, Bless their hearts), the cooking, the picking up, in short: they will do it all for you.
I think this will work out very well for you! Then, next year, you can return the favor and have Christmas at your place... might start a tradition!

Two years ago I had a TAH three days before xmas. We still had xmas at our house, but my hubby did all the work. I did stay in my jammies all day, and I lay on the couch in the living room a lot.
My DIL was 8 months pregnant and she came in and got big cushions and lay down on the rug right next to me at one point.

Hi Mellymac
My surgery is also on the 18th of December. My DR said that she would put me on hormones for a short time -- didn't elaborate on what "short" meant. That's a later discussion with her. I'd really suggest that you talk to your DR about this issue. I have the opportunity to attend a workshop on HRT and heart disease given by a cardiologist the week before my surgery. Check your local hospital and see if they are offering any workshops on this hot issue. Also, you might want to call a cardiologist and have a phone conversation with him / her about this topic.
I'm almost 54 so my surgery will put me where I should be at this age, but 28 is young and you should gather as much information as possible to ease your mind.
Good luck, and I'll be thinking of you on our big day!
Sammy
