Almost 5 wks after TVH, I'm bleeding?

Almost 5 weeks ago I had a total vaginal hysterectomy (kept ovaries & removed only uterus & cervix) due to carcinoma in situ. Like others, I've suffered moments of fatigue, but overall, the healing process has not been too bad. I'm concerned however, because last night, I went to the bathroom to discover that I had started bleeding again and I am still bleeding today (similar to a regular period). Is this normal at 5 weeks??? I've read on many websites that it may simply be due to the inside sutures disintegrating and that it's perfectly normal, whereas other websites mention that I may have done too much causing the internal stitches to tear, or perhaps it could be leftover blood clots from the surgery and that I should see my Dr immediately! I admit that I went grocery shopping yesterday, baked a cake and decorated it to take to our neighbors for dinner and then stayed up extra late, but at 5 weeks, many people are already going back to work - I would not think that would classify as "over-doing-it", would it? Should I be concerned about this bleeding or is it normal???

Hi and

I am not sure, but since you kept your ovaries could you be having what they call a "mini period"? dont think are the stitches, but to be on the safe side, call your doctor and see what he says....let us know.....

iwin

A hysterectomy is major surgery and, in your fourth week post-op, it's still early days ~ the initial and vital healing takes approximately 6 weeks, with full recovery then taking anything from 3 months to a year.

As you didn't keep your cervix, you've no need to worry about "mini-periods".

It will help you to read our <links> Post-Op Page which is packed with information, including the Checkpoint Weeks 3-4.

The best thing you can do is contact your doctor as soon as possible, just to be on the safe side and nip any potential problem in the bud.

Will you let us know what you find out? Take care!
