Worried about gen anesthesia and...

Hi all, My laproscopic supracervical H is tomorrow, June 23rd. Today is bowel prep day! Lucky me!

I am worried abiout the general anesthesia and being intubated..because sometimes my jaw locks up -usuallywhile sleeping-- and I am afraid that will happen tomrrow and they won't be able to get the breathing tube OUT...my jaw locks when I sleep funny and it's been about a year since it last happened.

I know this is silly...BUT any advice, etc is appreciated!

(Just got my period, great! SO GLAD THAT WILL BE OVER SOON!)

Thanks
Elizabeth

Re: Worried about gen anesthesia and...

Tell the anesthesiologist your concerns. Usually people are pretty relaxed under anesthesia so I don't think that comes up much but if the anesthesiologist is concerned they can use a "bite block" which is a plastic piece around the tube to prevent someone from being able to bite or lock down on the tube. He/she should be able to tell you the plan to prevent any issues and then you can rest your mind. Best wishes for your surgery and recovery.

Re: Worried about gen anesthesia and...

I am scheduled for surgery on July 20th. I am totally terrified of general anesthesia and am a nurse. Anyone have any recommendation to put me at ease. I do not know why this is.

Re: Worried about gen anesthesia and...

I have worked in a hospital for over 30 years and was terrified of the general anesthesia, I wish I had told the surgeon because when I finally did ( after I had surgery ) he was very reassuring. Some times those of us who are work in the health care field are the biggest worriers. Good luck to both of you.

Re: Worried about gen anesthesia and...

I was worried about grinding my teeth during surgery since I was not allowed to wear my night guard. I already broke a tooth grinding my teeth at night a few years ago. I brought this up to my orthodontist and she said that with a breathing tube in my mouth there would be a significantly reduced risk of grinding my teeth. She was not worried. She advised me to bring my nightguard to the hospital and wear it afterwards. I was glad she calmed me down about the whole thing. I would definitely bring it up to so you can get appropriate care.
