What is a binder for?

I just found out today that my doc wants to do a TAH next week. I'm really scared right now and don't even know what to expect.

Let me start with a simple question...what is a binder for?

Re: What is a binder for?

A binder is a wide band of fabric with velcro closures on the ends. You wrap it around your abdomen after surgery to provide some extra support. Some of them have pockets to hold gel-packs that can be used either cold or hot, depending on what your doctor recommends to help with pain.

The Hyster Systers store sells a couple of different versions and there is a video that shows how to position the binder, though people seem to adjust that based on what is most comfortable for them.

There is a lot of information on this site about what to expect, including a lot of videos. I think the most important thing to remember is that this surgery is the one most frequently performed on women in the US, so doctors and hospitals have a lot of experience with the various procedures and issues that can arise during and after them. This is a case where it helps to believe that practice makes perfect!

Re: What is a binder for?

I'm 7 days post OP and wearing my binder right now. I started wearing it at 1 day, then took it off for 2 days and haven't taken it off since. It really helps with relieving pain and the phantom movements you will feel.

It also helps with turning over, standing up and walking standing straight up.
