TAH/BSO After Menopause

I am 62 and definitely post-menopausal. I never took hormones and am glad because I understand they can aggravate fibroids and that I don't need. I didn't have any pain, just a couple of spottings. Dr. did an endometrial biopsy and rx TAH/BSO. I don't "think" I have any emotional attachment to these organs. I never married (not yet anyway!) and my generation did not engage in promiscus or recreational sex so i never thought about those organs. I don't seem to see any post-menopausal women schedueld for my procedure. People sympathize and say you'll feel better but I've never felt badly!!!!

TAH/BSO After Menopause

Popokii,

Please don't feel that you have to take your doc's reccomendation. If you have had no other problems then I would suggest a second opinion on the TAH/BSO.
May I ask how long ago you stopped having your period? Did your Dr. say why he/she felt you needed the hyst and what caused the spotting?

My grandma had her TAH/BSO at the age of 72 only because she started the spotting lead them to find out she had some nasty cells forming in her uterus. Otherwise she said she would have gone to the grave with all the parts God had given her. LOL

TAHBSO

I'm having the hysterectomy because my doctor rx it. My diagnosis is Complex Hyperplasia Atypia which is a pre-cancerous condition. He said it calls for aggressive management and if I were his sister or wife, this is what he would recommend.

The key word in the diagnosis is Complex. He is doing an abdominal because this is the safest and gives him a chance to see everything and avoid any other prob lems.

I would be uneasy not having it because of what I now know.
I will follow up with the pathology report.

You are doing this to avoid the future fight that you may have with cancer which can be an EVIL one! Taking care of yourself is never a bad thing. As to feeling better, well does feeling better in your heart that you won't have to worry about cancer count?

Hi Popokii
Thanks for clearing that up for us. I didn't understand why you were having the hyst, but now I do!

Yes, this is a very serious condition, which should be dealt with, to avoid the evil cancer cells taking hold. You're still young, so you've got alot of LIVING to do yet!

You have definitely come to the right place to find love, comfort, support and answers to your questions.

TAH/BSO After Menopause

Hello Popokii

While you might feel OK now, I have a 70 year old Aunt who was diagnosed with uterine cancer 2 years ago. She was not as lucky as you because your problem was picked up before you became diagnosed with Cancer.

Usually when menopausal ladies have surgery it is because of cancer, or pre cancer. When it is pre cancer, you usually feel quite normal and healthy.

When premenopausal ladies have a hysterectomy, it can also be because of cancer or pre cancer, but also because their condition (fibroids, bleeding pain etc) has become unmanageable. So these ladies usually feel much better after surgery.

My Aunt has had major surgery, chemotherapy, but the treatment that has really rocked her was the radiation treatment, which, although completed 12 months ago, has left her with significant and uncomfortable bowel and anal issues.

Your Dr is absolutely doing the best thing for your health. Hopefully, you will then stay as well as you are now.

Good luck!
