Surgery friday still unsure of choices

My surgery is scheduled for friday at noon, must leave for the hospital by 9:30 am, so I am sure very few will be able to read or respond to this post.

I still am worried about my decision to keep my ovaries, I am such a raving maniac with my PMS, I don't think my family could handle me going into instant menopause. I keep reading how HRT now is under attack, how difficult it even is to get yourself in balance through replacements, and are they really dangerous? I truly don't know what to do. I have instructed the doctor if anything looks irregular, take it out. I feel like I am ordering at a fast food restaurant, take the uterus, leave the cervix, try to keep the ovaries, and the tubes are up for grabs, and oh, by the way do all this laparoscopically. Who knows, I am worn out from thinking about it, time to try and just move on with my decision, I hope it doesn't cost me my life.

Thanks for letting me vent sisters!

LSH 7/19 HUGE painful fibroids, flooding, clotting, look 7 months pregnant, anemic, pain in lower back, down legs, bladder pressure too!

Surgery friday still unsure of choices

I had a TAH/BSO on May 20. I told my doc to take everything. I am 38 and had no sign of cancer, but was so tired of all the pain and "bleeding to death" every month. I had a cyst on one ovary and some endometriosis.
I do not regret my decision to take all one minute. I am so glad that I will never have to worry about getting ovarian cancer again. I take Premarin .625mg and the only problem I had was headaches for about a week until my body adjusted to it. Now I have no problems at all. I am not worried about the latest news on HRT. If you look at the numbers of the women in the study, they are pretty much consistent with your everyday chances of getting cancer or heart disease even if not on HRT.
Good luck, and don't worry.

Hi lanjontay,
I think if you have any question about doing so, you should keep your ovaries. You can always decide to take them out later.

BTW the negative press on HRT is about a study in women who still have a uterus. The arm of the study with folks like us, without a uterus, is ongoing because there has not been a clear increase in risks for that group. To be honest, I am not optomistic about future results on HRT in women with a hysterectomy, but the study results just are not conclusive at this time. I think by keeping your ovaries, you are keeping your options open.

If the posts are any indication, a lot of women become anxious and question their decisions right before surgery. Seems like what you are going through tonight is normal...uncomfortable, but normal. I'm sure that I will need to re-read this post to remind myself of that on August 28, the night before my surgery.

Wishing you a speedy, uneventful recovery,
Jane
