Op for Additional Reasons
Greetings All!
I am a new member, but my situation seems "a bit" different from most. I have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). A recent ultrasound revealed enlarged ovaries full of cysts and a terribly thick endometrium. I have suffered from severe uterine bleeding (9-12 pads per day) for the past 18 years. I have NEVER been regular (have a period one month, have 3 the next month, skip the next 6 months, etc.). I have suffered awful migraines that last 7-9 days (my boss isn't happy about that). I am abnormally tired all the time, and I never feel "good". I have developed type II diabetes and hypertension (normal daily reading is 155/120), and I AM JUST 27! My doctors have run countless tests from bloodwork to MRI of the head to CT scan of the kidneys to Echocardiogram of the heart to try and rule in or out certain conditions, but everything keeps coming back to the gynecological. I am seeing a new gyne, my fourth opinion who agrees with the other 3 that a hysterectomy is my only option to stop bleeding, decrease migraine triggers, possibly lower blood pressure that is likely caused by my disease, and to feel better in general. I have thought about it for almost a year now, and I am at peace with my decision to go ahead and take out everything, and my surgery is scheduled for early June. Did anyone else have PCOS prior to or with their other conditions and have a hysterectomy? I am also worried about endometriosis. Has anyone had that condition, and it didn't show up on ultrasound? Has anyone else heard of a link between hypertension and PCOS? Anyone else intolerant of birth control AND hormones like Provera and Depot Provera. Oh, it's weird, but my doctor gave me a Lupron Depot injection for me to see what it was like to be in menopause, and I have had my first normal BP readings in months! Not to mention, I am feeling better in some ways; however, still bleeding, still suffering migraines, still have severe abdominal and pelvic pain. I guess my biggest question is does anyone out there have any words of encouragement or wisdom for the newbie? I'd appreciate any comments. Thanks.

Op for Additional Reasons
I had TAH/BSO at age 33, after years of PCOS/ENDO. I had began having hypertension as well. I was not insulin-resistant at the time of surgery, but had been in the past. I had taken Dyazide to help with fluid retention and b/p. My last time to take it was 7 months ago...before surgery. My b/p has been okay since. I am not retaining fluid. (it will be interesting to see if this continues as Texas heats up in the summer!) I have not had a return of my PCOS symptoms(yet). It is likely to happen though! There is a connection to PCOS and Hypertension, PCOS and Diabetes, PCOS and Heart Disease.....PCOS is not over just by removing the ovaries!!! Here is a link to some info. on PCOS...it is very detailed info. Re:PCOS

I hope you find the info. you are looking for! Keep doing your research and you and your doctor need to sit down for a to discussion about what you hope to accomplish by having surgery and what is realistic expectations. Come up with a POST-OP plan for PCOS. If your doctor is not experienced with PCOS, seek the opinion of a REPRODUCTIVE ENDOCRINOLOGIST. There are follow-up labs and maintenance after surgery for PCOS.

Ronda
