Tips for Anemia!!!
This subject came up in another thread so I placed some info out there for anemia.
I sure hope this can be of help to all of you pre and post-op anemia sufferers!
Here you go:
Depending on how severe your anemia really is, perhaps you could just take a good multi with iron and eat really, really well.
Nutrition is very important. I have been practicing excellent nutrition and studying it for approximately 8 years. I am also involved in nutritional foods with my job. Some great foods high on the iron list are:
*organ meats, 10-12mg.
*red meats, 1.1 - 3.8 mg., beef is highest
*mussels, 11.2 mg.
*sardines, 2.9 mg (you can kill two birds w/ one stone here/also calcium
*cod/snapper, .3 - .6 mg
*lamb, 2.2 mg.
*pork, 1.5 mg.
*1 egg, 1.1 mg.
*spinach - 1/4 cup, .2 mg
*raisins, 4 mg.
*rolled oats, raw, 2.1 mg.
*baked beans, 2.8 mg.
*peas, 1/2 cup, 1.0 mg.
*wholemeal bread, 1 slice, .4 mg.
The are two different types of iron in food: haem iron, found in red meat seafood and poultry, and non-haem iron found in breads, fruits, breakfast cereals, vegetable, legumes (e.g. baked beans), nuts and eggs.
Haem iron foods are rich in iron and contain iron in the form that is easily absorbed by the body. Red meat also has a special effect on iron absorption.
The meat when eaten together with the vegetables, can boost the absorption of non-haem iron by up to four times. Vitamin C also has a positive effect on the absorption of iron.
Also important - Make sure to take plenty of vitamin C, preferably from the foods you eat. I take a buffered form of C called Ester C, along with my multi and B-complex, but foods provide the most ready form of vitamin C. If you smoke cigararettes, be especially careful, it depletes vitamin C from your body and folic acid.
Vitamin C makes your blood vessels stronger, helps you heal faster, and helps you resist infections. It also helps your body absorb the iron from the foods you eat.
