How can i go back to work like this?
Hi all! Its been about 4 1/2 weeks since my surgery. I developed anemia right after the surgery (hemoglobin went from 12.2 to 6). I am sooo tired. Even after a good night's sleep, I'm still dead. I am getting worried because I m due to go back to work on the 29th (teacher). My brain is a mess! Just wanted to vent. Thanks!

You didn't say, but are you on iron pills (they look like green M&Ms)? I went home from the hospital with a prescription and even though I don't take them as often as the GYN wants me to (it upsets my stomach too much) it raised my iron level from a low of 7.1 after surgery to 10 at my 6 week check-up. Taking the iron made a difference in my fatigue, short term memory, brain fog, etc.

charlmarjo,
You can't do what you can't do. Figure out Option 2 for if you're just not feeling up to going back to work on the 29th, then you can quit stressing about that and focus on getting better.

Hi there,
I agree with Nancy..if you are still very tired take time off..you only get one chance to heal properly..it may take a while. I am a teacher also and only work part-time and it took me 2 and a half months before I felt able to go to work.
I am sure if you talk to your principal they will understand..remember you have just had major surgery!

Re: How can i go back to work like this?
HI...I also have anemia..and I had a really hard time tolerating the iron but I stuck with it. I changed the timing of when I take the pill to taking it with dinner along with a multivitamin and a 1000 U vitamin D.
I went back to work after being out for 4 full weeks. I was tired too - but around week 6 I noticed a huge difference in stamina, energy - had an overall feeling of feeling better. I also have a hard time with anethesia - it makes my brain go into a fog - and I had 2 surgeries back to back - my 2nd one being long (I was under for 4+ hours) It seemed to take me weeks to bounce out of feeling I was in slow motion all the time..
Have you thought about asking your doctor for another blood test to check your hemoglobin level? It could be also its not increasing ...I read up a lot on anemia - its hard to recover from sometimes.
Take care!

Re: How can i go back to work like this?
Wow sounds almost like what happened to me. Prior to my surgery I had heavy bleeding and hemorrhaged and my hemoglobin went down to a 6.7 had to have a blood transfusion and was put on prescription Iron pills for about a month. Before my surgery my levels were up to 13 but after the surgery they went down again to like 7.1 so that next day I had to have an iron infusion and later that same night they also did another blood transfusion and put me back on the iron pills. I took them for about 7 weeks. I had a blood test done at 8 weeks to check my levels and they were fine. I am surprised with your level having been so low that they did not want you to do a blood transfusion also? Or at least the iron infusion? I also think it would be a good idea if you tell your doctor whats going on and that you would like to have your levels re-tested. If only for piece of mind, at least you will know if the iron pills are working or if you need to take something else. And as for going back to work before you are physically ready don't do it. I could have gone back after 6 weeks but I chose to go back at 8 weeks and it was still tough the first week with getting tired and the lovely swelly belly (still get the swelly belly but not as bad)Best of luck to you. Let us know how you make out.

Re: How can i go back to work like this?
I have a lot of experience with iron-deficient anemia -- I've struggled with it since I was a kid. Once your hemoglobin is down, it takes a while to build it back up -- your body just doesn't absorb it very quickly. In fact, over the past several years as my vampire fibroids came on the scene, I never could get it back up into the normal range. Prior to that, it would come around eventually, but I don't think I ever got things straightened out in less than a couple of months. The good news is that if you've been taking your supplements diligently, it almost certainly has done you good -- you just aren't yet at the point where you can tell the difference. Talk to your doctor and hang in there!

Re: How can i go back to work like this?
I am going back to teaching tomorrow at 4 weeks post-op, against doctor's wishes, but my finances won't permit anything less. I am also very, very tired and have a couple of long days (getting ready for Thanksgiving programs at 2 schools next week). I am taking iron pills twice a day and a multiple vitamin, but I'm still pretty much wiped out. We'll see what happens. I figured going in for 2 days followed by the weekend and then 2 more days before Thanksgiving break was a good way to wean myself back before full-time. God bless and best wishes.
