I'm changing my mind every 15 minutes-migraines/ovaries

Hi. I am a migraine sufferer. My first one was when I was only 8 years old and definitely not associated with a cycle. But, as ovary cysts grew - so would the appearance of migraines - so some of the migraines were triggered by my hormones. I noticed that after anesthethia I could expect a migraine within a day. so, with this surgery - the taking of my ovaries and going under for a few hours, I really thought I was doomed. I had a LAVH BSO and decided at the last minute - no hormones! I asked the doc just minutes before my surgery if I could go cold turkey and he said we could try it. I was very concerned about migraines going on HRT. Well, I am only five days out - but haven't gotten a migraine yet!! Some good nights of sweats, but no other problems.

Hope this helps.

Ellie-
Have your doctor take a poll in the OR and then let you know the outcome in recovery! (I am kidding of course - but SURPRISE! )

A different take on the headaches...

I started having migranes (real bad for four months) in April '07, mri detected nothing, strokescan nothing, bloodwork all okay except low(hi) thyroid (doc says still in normal ?) and now I'm getting a test to rule out diabetes as numbers high but within normal range several years in a row. Back to migranes... discovered that I may have a problem with my ear believe it or not that was causing the pain but I believe that hormones had something to do with this because having all symptoms of perimenopausal and leading up to the recent surgery. Weaned myself off topomax 100 mg/day 2 weeks before surgery. Took little pain killers afterwards as laproscopy used to remove tube/cyst. Worst part was the anesthesiologist had hard time w/me - I must have been fighting him?!! He said it was because I am overweight. Migranes tolerable now but still happen and going to take BHRT after getting hormones tested w/kit from Menopause Institute out of Sugarland, TX. Will keep posting on thread about that later. Anyway, there is a tube leading from the ear that gets stiff and when I feel headache coming on, I yawn and start chewing motion or chew gum for a minute or two and bingo - headache majically goes away! I'm curious if BHRT will eliminate them and make me feel better as it is marketed. Still working with doc's to solve other potential problems.

For those patiently waiting I kept them. She said they looked perfect, there's no history of any kind of cancers in my family, and I'm going to start full time (i.e. no stopping) on the pill as soon as I've had time to heal. I had a MASSIVE migraine after surgery but I think it was the anesthesia. So far, so good

Thanks and I'll keep following up - but in the post op section - YAY!!

Home reading, absorbing the wealth of info...

and coming to an acknowledgement that when I was perimenopausal and leading up to the cyst in tube problem I was estrogen dominant. I went to daystar and bought some of their progreserone/estrogen cream and used it up until I got the headaches back in April when I stopped everything hoping to find something I was using was causing it. I never incorporated it back into my regimine because the symptoms were becoming more severe and knew I needed to get it dealt with from a doctor and really didn't know what to do or where to turn. What I now realize is that because my estrogen was fluctuating is a natural event in menopause and it is getting more severe and more symptoms layering over the top of the perimenopausal symptoms that I get it. When reading the book, beating menopause naturally by somers and rothenberg, MD part three of the book put it clear in my mind what was going on with me in perspective. All that time I was confused and kind of going around in a fog because my mom had a surgical menopause at an early age and I really didn't know who to talk to about it. Every doctor I've been to, men and women, just blew me off and didn't give me any real information or help about what was going on with me. Thank God for everybody that is out there trying to get the message out to women who are suffering needlessly and this group that is helping us connect with each other trying to process what has happened and how we can get our old selves back. I want me back and not to be scared of this. When you are normally healthy and happy, happily married, the works just a little perimenopausal and then WHAM, you start getting flips of hormones and the migranes that make you nuts and all the other symptoms. There is really no words to tell you how bewildered you are inside and to still continue to try to live your life. I honestly do not know how I functioned being so depressed and stressed, coming home and not being able to do my normal things. I'd say for about at least four months this past year my life was in a complete disarray yet to someone looking in, I was keeping a face on and doing my job and social functions like all was well. I was dying inside and needed medical help and now I feel that I at least have had the medical help I needed for right now, maybe I need to go back later and deal with the uterus because of fibroids, but I feel I have the information and tools to handle this. It has made a world of difference.

Yea, sometimes the strangest things can set your body off or on a rampage. I know that since I got myself off of the topomax I can deal with the occasional headache like I mentioned above, by chewing gum but it seems the medicine accentuated the headaches instead of getting rid of them. I still think that maybe I have a slight case of TMJ (jaw pain from dental) or maybe I need to have an ear, nose and throat doc check me out to rule out polyps, etc. but seems like the hormones and stress leading up to the surgery really were getting my headaches rolling - it was awful and then to go back and forth before the surgery whether I should or should not do this or that - you can have all the emotions rolling up and down about it and finally I called the doc and asked her the last day before the surgery what I should do and she said if fibroids not bothering me now - we'll deal with them later. I found out that hormones and freezing may be best approach instead of full hyst but I second guess myself. Didn't work when I was in school and doesn't work now. Go with your first gut instinct and stay put.

I'm changing my mind every 15 minutes-migraines/ovaries

Hi everyone! I came across this thread when searching for info on migraines. My TAH was in April 06. I didn't get to keep my ovaries unfortunately and I'm only 31. I've been playing the hormone jungle dance ever since. I scrolled through the pages impatiently keeping my fingers crossed that she kept her ovaries...good going!!! You won't regret it!

I too suffer from horrible migraines. I have since I was a teenager. My daughter who is 7 was diagnosed with them earlier this year. My mom missed most of my life due to them. She had her hysterectomy at 23. So I feel lucky to have held on to my insides a little longer than she did. Right now I am struggling with what to do...stay on HRT...Get off of HRT... I'm on Vivelle dot .075mg and 100mg topamax twice a day. In the past two weeks I've had three days migraine free. Let's put it this way...when I have a migraine or headache free day I rejoice!! I just want my life back.

So from a hormonal stand point keeping your ovaries was the right thing to do cause without them you run into all sorts of HRT problems.

wish you lots of luck!
