Wsea,
A week? Was it the same surgery or something totally different? And you are probably right that she is worried about having to cover for you.
I don't know if you will ever get people to stop giving advice but you do learn to just listen(if it's not too long) and then decide whether it is valuable to you. Also great suggestion for asking them about their lives. Most people will tell you something pretty quickly.

yeah, she says a week for a TAH. i know that she is making it up. but everyone else in the office is male, and i hope they arent believing her.
luckily, all the people who i care about (and who care about me) are completely supportive of my decision and insist that they will be there for me for whatever i need.

One week for a TAH. Count me among the skeptical that you could possibly do that. I just think that is ridiculous. I am glad that the other people are supporting you. Some people just like to brag and if this is actually true, she needs to tell everyone his name so women don't have to search so long to find him.
I have a co-worker who sounds like this person because when I returned to work on third week of recovery, she said that I was a baby because it only took her one week before returning to work. I am learning to just say how interesting and keep going. Only thing she seems to understand.

Re: Just became pre-op ,and already it starts
Well, I'm lucky when it comes to my coworkers and my work situation in general: we all telecommute part of the time (two days a week plus one week a month), and if we make prior arrangements, we can work from home on other days as well. So I'm expecting to ask for two or three weeks of "work from home" post-surgery, and hoping to only need a few days of "not working". We've had a number of situations where were recovering from serious illnesses, working when they had the strength for it and then just saying "Ok, nap time for me!" when they needed to rest -- so I've got good support there. In addition, management isn't inclined to second-guess people's own judgment on whether they're ready to come back to work. So I'm not worried there.
To be honest, my biggest concern is for a very close friend who had TSH and took it very hard -- not in great shape and dealing with chronic pain before the surgery, demanding job (plus a lot of demands that she put on herself), impatience with the healing process, distrust of the medical profession, and lots of emotional upheavals. She's offered to come stay with me, which I can definitely use, and I know that she'll be super wonderful in the situation. I just don't like the scary stories. I'm starting to think that maybe my best approach would be to just say that: "I know you mean well, but you're scaring me."

I agree that telling them face to face they are scaring you may stop them telling the stories. I know before mine I went online to other sites and scared myself silly. I called doc panicking and told him all my fears. He told me that was the reason I picked him because he was the best. It turned out to be a fairly easy surgery. Sending hugs.

Re: Just became pre-op ,and already it starts
I agree with Linda... nod your head and say Oh OK. I didnt take to heart anything that anyone else had told me presurgery. And alot of them told me how theirs went. The only person I listened to partially was my mother since she was the same age as I was when she had hers done. But she didnt scare me with how horrible it would be. I kinda just let all the bad stories roll of my back. I came to this site to get alot of different views on it. I wasnt afraid of the surgery itself but nervous about the post op pain mostly. I had a LAVH with a posterior repair. I can say that I have a very high tolerance for pain and I did well after surgery..my posterior repair hurt more than anything but not anything I couldnt handle. After my surgery my mother told me that she also had the posterior repair done (which I didnt know) and that she wanted to tell me that the first time I have sex it is gonna hurt alot but it does get better. She said she kept telling herself oh no I ruined myself. I was like thanks mom scare me to death why dont ya. But she then reassured me that it got better and was the best thing she has ever done..to just take baby steps. I only take to heart the advice that I know I want from someone. I have a friend who was freakin out because I went for a quick run to walmart 4 days post op. I had to I had cabin fever and needed to get out. She said Oh my u are gonna overdo it and u will be sorry. I just shook my head. Everyone is different in their recovery and you only need to concern urself with how u are doing. I wish u luck for an uneventful surgery and a fast easy recovery. I am 7 days post op and doing wonderfully. My mom is so shocked at how well I am doing ..I guess in 20 years they have made improvements in the surgery and people need to realize that.
