Deep breath, sweetie.

Hopefully you want ever have to deal with a prolapse. It isn't a given. Even without a hysterectomy women's bodies are designed with a susceptibility to prolapse. The wear and tear on muscles if you had children, extremely heavy lifting done improperly, age and muscle tone are all things that can lead to a prolapse even if you hadn't had the hysterectomy.

Your Dr should have attached the vaginal vault to ligaments to keep it suspended, Things you can do to help prevent prolapse....kegels, proper lifting where you avoid stress pushing down toward the vaginal opening, avoid straining during bowel movements and vaginal estrogen to keep the tissue healthy.

Talk to you Dr. about it, I was freaked out about prolapse as well and so far I'm 5 years out and things are all good.

Re: Vagina prolapse? What!!!!

now I'm going to.be afraid to ever poop without using a softener for the rest of my.life. Ugh

I already make too much estrogen (estrogen dominance) but don't know what this vaginal estrogen stuff is. post op is Dec 5. I need to ask her about this and how my vagina is supported. ::sigh::

Re: Vagina prolapse? What!!!!

I understand how you feel. Things are different, sensations are different and even at 3 months the occasional vaginal swelling may appear. It does not mean you had a prolapse or are going to have a prolapse.

I have found the best source of information to be here. Don't cry, everyday will be a little different. At 3 months I was still taking things slow. It gets better. It really does.

Re: Vagina prolapse? What!!!!

If you are really concerned you can ask to see a pelvic floor therapist. They can teach you how to tighten your muscles down there so this doesn't happen. They are very invasive though. I understand they will put their fingers inside and have you clench. I am a hypochondriac and waiting for my appointment. I figure I would rather do everything I can now to make sure this never has a chance of happening. And if I have to live with some invasiness so be it.

Re: Vagina prolapse? What!!!!

After my third child, I went to a physical therapist because every time I would sneeze, I would pee. My gynecologist put her gloved fingers in my vagina and asked me to do a kegal. I sucked at those so she referred me to a special physical therapist who taught me how to do them the right way. I even had this weird sensor that went in just a little in my vagina and it would plug into a computer. I would do kegals and see a visual representation of it on the screen. The plug in thing was mine to keep and I brought it with me each time and would wash it when I was done. I had to practice them between appointments. I made a lot of progress since my first day. My insurance paid for 10 appointments per calendar year. now I do them when I am at a long stoplight or train crossing.

I asked my Dr about this last week at my appt. she said your chance to not increase with a hysterectomy. Sometimes it just happens to some women.

Re: Vagina prolapse? What!!!!

I had anterior and posterior prolapses before I even had my hysterectomy. In fact, the doctor did those repairs at the same time as my hyster.

Re: Vagina prolapse? What!!!!

I asked my doctor if he gave me a vaginal sling, but he said my bladder had been so compromised by the cervical tumor, that he had trouble freeing it from the tumor and abdominal wall. He said he couldn't do a sling at the time, but I may need one 'down the road'.
