Nov.6 TAH... getting a cold. HELP

Hi Anita!

I have never had surgery before, and my date for the hysterectomy has not yet been set. However, I understand that with surgery, it is best to be as healthy as possible. If your doctor is suggesting that you wait, I think you should take his advice. It's always better to err on the side of caution.

I will keep you in my prayers.

Take care,

Lisa

Nov.6 TAH... getting a cold. HELP

Hey,

My surgery was scheduled for tomorrow also. I saw my ob/gyn Tuesday morning and was fine, but by that afternoon started feeling like I was coming down with a cold. By Wednesday I was running a fever and feeling miserable. It came on very quickly. I called my ob/gyn and he sent me to my Primary Care on Thursday, who said if I didn't have a fever on Monday I should be o.k. However, I was coughing alot and had signs of sinus/bronchial infection. He didn't prescribe anything and basically cleared me for surgery.

When I went to the hospital for the pre-op Friday the anesthesiolgist said he was not comfortable with my going forward with the surgery. He said that I would be at very high risk for pneunomia and that I'd be miserable trying to recover with a cough (VERY painful). However, my ob/gyn prescribed antibiotics and cough medicine and told me to show up for surgery as scheduled.

Needless to say, I was concerned. I took the antibiotics which caused nausea and vomiting, so I called the ob/gyn today. He said that he wanted me to show up tomorrow, but for a chest x-ray instead of surgery. He said that they would give me a new date tomorrow. I know this is for the best, although I hate the thought of waiting another week to ten days. But, I want to go into surgery feeling healthy and strong. I'm telling myself it's better to wait a little longer pre-op than complicate or prolong my recovery. Think of what's best for you in the long run and you'll make the right decision. Trust your gut and TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF. Good luck . . . Kathleen

Thank you for your reply's
I called my Dr. this am and told him about my cold. It isn't as bad as yours KK, but he also said I run the risk of pneumonia. I have been anticipating this day for weeks and now I feel discouraged. They don't know if they can get me in before the holidays. So bummed. At least I know I'm not alone KK.

Nov.6 TAH... getting a cold. HELP

Anita,

I went for my chest x-ray this morning and they are not going to re-schedule me until they know that my lungs are clear. I really want to do this before the end of the year because my insurance company is changing their copay schedule and it will cost me hundreds of dollars more after January 1st.

I'm focusing on and anticipating the best possible outcome. I can't imagine trying to recover from this surgery with a complication like pneumonia - in fact, I'd rather risk a higher cost than risk pneumonia. Anyway, my twin sister had this surgery ten years ago and she assured me that I don't want to be coughing after - she said that she remembers coughing being incredibly painful. That's only logical since the incision is through abdominal muscles.

So, even though waiting longer is extremely frustrating, I think we can rest assured that it's the better of two not so great choices. It will all be o.k. sooner or later - and even if it's later, at least we know it is going to be o.k. HANG IN THERE! Kathleen (kk)

Anita,

I'm so happy for you that your date is so soon. I know you're relieved. My chest x-ray came back negative for walking pneumonia (it's just bronchitis) and I'm already feeling better. So, they scheduled me for Nov. 27th - one week after you! Now we have time to get strong and healthy and our recoveries will be a breeze! Keep in touch . . . kk
