Mirena, ablation or hysterectomy (updated)

Hi i'm new here.
My uterus is fibromatosis i started getting very heavy bleeding and really bad pain 2yrs ago, after having a hysteroscopy and a biopsy he saw that my uterus is lined with fibrous spots. A month later my period was even more painful so i called my dr and i went to his studio and he put a Mirena coil in, i had cramping and bleeding for a week. A month later my period came and the 3rd day the coil came out. I called my Dr and he was very upset about it but he said to go to his studio again and put another in! For my luck i was ok for a year or so.I had only spotting i put on a bit of weight. I started having very bad back aches and pain nearly all over. I was sent to see a Rheumatologist and i have Rheumatoid Arthritis. I'm on medication for it. I sometimes wonder if the mirena brought all this on.
Last April i started bleeding again and every month it got heavier last month my cycle came after 3 weeks with alot of blood and this month i started having bad pain 5 days before bleeding which this month wasn't so bad but the pain was really bad. Tomorrow i'll be going to my Dr and he said he has to decide if i need the mirena taken or not. My GP said i need to have it taken out and will need a hysterectomy.I asked about ablation but both Dr's have said no.
Hope i get some answers soon .
Good luck to all

Re: Mirena, ablation or hysterectomy

Did the doctors give any reason for not doing the Ablation?

Re: Mirena, ablation or hysterectomy

Hi. Just been to see my Dr. He didn't take the mirena out because he said if he does i would end up with a hysterectomy and because i'm not bleeding alot he says to take pain killers for the pain and see how things go. I just hope i don't feel as bad as last month!
Bye for now and will let you lnow how things go.

Re: Mirena, ablation or hysterectomy

Hi i wrote a couple of months ago about the mirena, i've had it for 2yrs now but the last 7mths i started bleeding again not heavy but i'm having alot of pain. I had to insist with my Dr for the last few months, he gave me pain killers but i don't want to take to much because i'm on medication Rheumatoid arthritis. I caleed him again yesterday and he has finally admitted that the pain is due to the iud , and so next week i'll be going in to have the ablation done although he has said to me that it might not help me cause my uterus is to big, but i want to give it a go before having a hysterectomy.
Just wanted to know if anyone has had a success with it?
Fingers crossed i'm a bit scared of this whole situation.

Re: Mirena, ablation or hysterectomy (updated)

Friday morning i went in to hospital to have the endometrial ablation done. I was given a spinal anesthetic and the surgery was done , i watched it to! Unfortunately i had an allergic reaction to the anesthetic and i was given a strong steroid in the IV so the cough calmed down straight away and all went well. I was taken to the ward and was kept in overnight. Pain was bearable i've only got a feeling of tiredness and dizziness.
Now i've got to wait for next month to see if this has worked or not fingers crossed.

Re: Mirena, ablation or hysterectomy (updated)

My next door neighbour had a coil fitted and it suited her, but clearly that was no good for you with all that continuing pain.

I had fibroids, and went for an ablation 2 years ago. I was told beforehand that my uterus was the maximum size they could attempt this procedure, and for most people they never have another period.

Unfortunately, I was in the 2% of women for whom it does not work! Probably because the fibroids were just too big.
My periods continued. The gaps between them were increasing, but the flooding gradually got as bad as ever.

The GP advised seeing a gyne specialist, as it was unusual that, at 57 I still had not gone through the menopause.
We all decided that the best thing was to have it all taken out.
The histopathology showed large fibroids and cysts on the ovaries.

It is a hard judgement call unless you can see inside.
Good luck with your decision making

Re: Mirena, ablation or hysterectomy (updated)

Just read your post again. Hope the ablation went well.
I hope you are in the 98% for whom the ablation works.
It is a much simpler procedure than having a major operation.
Fingers crossed for you

I would get a second opinion with everything you are going through. I'm not sure I would trust this doctor.

Re: Mirena, ablation or hysterectomy (updated)

I've seen 3 other Drs before my decision to have the ablation and get mirena out. 2 said to keep the mirena and take painkillers but the pain would start a week before my period and get worse when my period started and then continue for a week after, and i couldn't put up with that it was to much.
