Upcoming hysterectomy 1/31: No overnight stay with robot?!?
Hi ladies! I'm brand new to the app! I have a hysterectomy scheduled for January 31st with the robot. My doctor told me I wouldn't need to stay the night but I have three small kids and wouldn't mind the extra stay to be safe. Did you all spend the night afte the robot surgery?! Would it be bad to ask him if I could spend the night? Thanks in advance

Upcoming hysterectomy 1/31: No overnight stay with robot?!?
I had robotic assisted surgery in December. Prior my surgeon said she had some people leave same day and some spend the night. I stated (not requested) to stay. My decision initially was based on the fact that I'm single and I was staying with "framily" for a few days after. A night in the hospital was one less night they had to keep an eye on me. Also, on the slim chance something went awry I wanted to be where they could fix it. I'm glad I did stay. The surgery ended up being more complicated and time consuming than she anticipated (5 hours vs. 2). She had to do a radical hysterectomy (took everything), I was under anasthesia longer, in recovery longer, and since I stayed I could ask the nurses my weird questions 1) why is my eyesight so wonky I can't read anything 2) why is my tongue numb.... etc. They still made sure I was up and out the next day. They didn't want me there any longer than that. I'm not sure I personally could have handled a same day discharge but big kudos to those who can.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 1/31: No overnight stay with robot?!?
I had da Vinci robotic surgery last month and was told from the beginning that I would be staying overnight. My surgery wasn't till early afternoon and I went home about 10 the next morning. If you can, I would hope that they let you stay but if your surgery is early in the morning you will probably be fine going home the same day.

Hi kcteddi2322 to HysterSisters!
Hospital stay varies by procedure, but with robotic-type procedure same day release is not uncommon. You can ask to see if you can stay the night and why.
Regardless, you will need help with your little ones, not just the day of or day after surgery, but for a good part of your recovery. Can family or friends help? This is MAJOR SURGERY, and recovery takes time: think weeks and not days. You will also need help with cooking, cleaning, dishes, laundry, shopping, driving, etc. You will need to take time off work - again, think weeks and not days.
Just remember that you are not alone in this - we are here for you.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy 1/31: No overnight stay with robot?!?
I was originally planning on going home the same day, but ended up staying the night which was the right decision for me. I was super out of it and finally my mom had to step in and tell them there was no way I was going anywhere but a hospital room. If your insurance covers it, and you feel more comfortable, it might be good to plan on staying
