3 weeks post hysterectomy: Dissolvable sutures through surface of incision
Dear friends, I will be 3 weeks post surgery tomorrow, and grateful. Have any of you experienced your dissolvable sutures/stitches making their way through your skin? I have a couple that have which seem to be slowing the healing process of my laparoscopic incisions. My doc said they should make their way out by themselves. Did yours eventually fall out or did you have to eventually get them removed? Any input would be appreciated. Thank you! Julie Nelson.

Re: Dissolvable sutures through surface of incision
I had gallbladder surgery a few weeks before my hysterectomy and those sutures have made their way out, as you described. The one in my belly button was poking me, so I went to cut off the tail end and the whole thing came out, it was a knot.
I'm not recommending that you yank it out, but if you gently tug it, does it come out or is there resistance? The second one, on the other side of the belly button incision, the knot showed up first and I pulled a little, but felt resistance, so left it alone another day. When I showered, it came out and I was able to wash the area thoroughly.
Whatever you do, don't pull if there is resistance. If it's still attached to something inside, it's best to leave it alone.

Hello. Thank you so much for responding. So glad I'm not alone. When I tried to tug about a week ago, when I fist took off the silicone covering the incisions, there was resistance and I haven't tried since. All I did was cut down the tail so it didn't catch on my clothes. I have been afraid to try since. Do you think it may be detached from inside by now for me to try again or shall I just wait? How long did yours take to come out by themselves? I so appreciate your help. Thank you!

Re: Dissolvable sutures through surface of incision
I have been trying to remember the timeline. I had my surgery August 31 and Dr told me to take the tape off after two weeks. I immediately saw that tail and realized that was what had been poking me, so that was for sure two weeks after surgery. The other one was a few days later, less than a week.
I couldn't leave them alone, they were really bothering me. If you do anything, do it in the shower after washing and make sure to pat dry, then clean with an alcohol swab. I happen to have stitch removing scissors (two boys) and I sterilized them beforehand. I wanted NO risk of infection, especially knowing they'd be diving into my bellybutton again for the hysterectomy! It turned out that I didn't even cut anything, but better safe than sorry!

3 weeks post hysterectomy: Dissolvable sutures through surface of incision
I also tried when I first saw them after taking the silicone covering off after two weeks (too much resistance) and tomorrow will be three weeks. I'm afraid to try again but may tug a little when I get out the shower. Thanks again for your input. I sincerely appreciate it. I hope your recovery is going well. Julie

A little tug might be all it takes this time. I hope so for your sake!
Ty for the thought to my recovery. I'm a turtle, slow and steady, in no rush to get anywhere!

Re: Dissolvable sutures through surface of incision
I'm six weeks post op. Just saw my surgeon yesterday. I had 4 strings hanging out of me. He said add a little bacitracin or Vaseline to the area and they will dissolve. One fell off this morning !

Thanks so much. I will give the Vaseline a try. It's good to know three weeks after surgery isn't too long to still have them hanging around if you still had them at six. That makes me feel better. I sincerely appreciate your response. Thank you so much. Julie

Thanks so much for your response. The stitches you have that haven't dissolved yet, are they ones like I am talking about that didn't stay under the skin but made their way through the surface of your skin? just want to be sure we're talking about the same thing. It gives me hope if I know it could take much longer for them to fall out. Albeit I don't think they'll dissolve now they're exposes to air. Thanks so much. I sincerely appreciate your input. Julie
