2+ years post hysterectomy: I miss the old me

Hi everyone. I had my hysterectomy on 2nd November 2012. Slowly since that time I have gained considerable amount of weight and have become very unsociable. I used to be a real social butterfly before but now I stay in my safe cocoon at home. I was unfortunately not able to have kids at all and my hysterectomy made it final.
At the time of my hysterectomy my brother was near death after having surgery so I couldn't focus on me. My husband also injured himself at work requiring 2 lots of spinal surgery on high eventually lead to him losing his job in 2014. Also my mother in law passed away after only 3 month battle with cancer.
We have been through so much. I dont feel depressed although my actions of not wanting to be with people says otherwise. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get the old me back?? It's getting to the point where my friends don't even bother calling me much.

I hate this me

Re: I miss the old me

So,sorry you have had so many assaults to your well being, there is nothing I can say to make it better regarding all your losses...but I will share this...

I lost my mother just before I had my trip to the castle, so I can understand...we never had a good relationship and I,think that was part of the problem, lots of what ifs ...

What has helped me feel so much better about myself is finally getting my weight and other health issues under control. I was over 270 pounds, not active, depressed I guess..all I wanted to do was stay at home...

When I was watching tv one night, couldn't sleep, I saw a program on PBS by Dr Hyman about. changing your eating habits...wow, has that one change made my life over. It took a big effort initially, but getting back to focusing on me for a change, reminding myself that I mattered put me back on the right track.

Since last April, almost a year now, I am down over sixty pounds, I no longer have diabetes, I feel wonderful, no more body aches and constantly feeling like giving up, and I can actually fit in regular clothes, regular chairs.

It still amazes me how much that TV program changed my life...perhaps that will help you too. Dr Hyman encourages people to begin a simple healthy way of eating, he calls it the ten day detox...and I am proof that despite being an over sixty, fat, old and depressed you can once again be happy and healthy.

I hope you will not give up, try this and,see if you don't have some very positive results. Best wishes HysterSister..you matter!

Re: I miss the old me

Hi butterfly 1976,
That sounds like a lot to deal with. And it also sounds like me before surgery. I started gaining weight when all my bleeding started. My friends also stopped calling for outings because they knew i would turn them down. I need to drop 15-20 lbs. My Dr insisted i start walking. I'm up to 1.5 miles per day. I've also been taking a multivitamin. I have more energy now at 6 weeks post than I have had in a long time. I got out and visited friends last night. I almost opted to stay home. Ya just gotta do it. Maybe go to walmart and walk around. For the exercise and if its anything like our local Wal-Mart, you'll run in to way too many ppl. Just Do It! Good luck to you!

Re: I miss the old me

I see that you kept your ovaries. However, it is possible that they are not functioning properly. Have you had your hormone levels tested? I agree that you have already gotten great advice, and not everything that goes wrong is a result of hormone issues, but it may be something that can help you along as low estrogen can lead to depression and other issues. Low testosterone can take away your "get up and go." Hormones being out of balance can contribute to weight gain.

Re: I miss the old me

The 10 detox book can be found in the library or try YouTube to watch the presentation. Make a commitment to yourself to take one step forward tomorrow. Even if you think it is a small step. It will put in motion and once you are in motion everything seems to be a little easier to do. You are worth the effort! You are worth taking care of yourself! You are WORTH it! The sisters here believe in you and your ability to start making the changes that are necessary. It isn't about the old you. It is about who you can become! This why you cannot get the old you back. It is time to become the person you are meant to be. YOU can do this!!! Keep us posted on how you are doing! Believe and achieve

Re: I miss the old me

It sounds like you went through a lot, in a short span of time. Depression is not always cut and dry. People who are depressed mostly don't even know that they are. Those around them see the changes. It is good though that you recognize not feeling like yourself. I would suggest you take some time and talk with someone (Dr, Therapist, Close friend or family member ) about all you have been through. Also, even if you don't feel like it, try to walk outside, get out more often. Excersize and Sunshine are really good natural anti depressants.

Awesome! You go!!! And i like the comment Kathy 2015 made, it isn't about the old you. It is about who you can become. Words for all of us to live by.
