doc suggests we consider a hysterectomy

I was totally flabergasted when he mentioned this but I am thinking that it may be the right thing for me. I just need to do some research and have soem support. DH failed miserably when I mentioned this being something in my near future.

The reason for the surgery would be uterine prolapse. I have been having irregular periods for years. ( I am 40) Bleeding/spotting after sex. Painful sex. Urinary incontinence (mild) has become a problem. Cramps have gotten noticably worse, sometimes I cannot walk. My PMS is worse all the time. I am more moody than ever for at least a week before my period. I was diagnosed with a cyst on my right ovary a couple of years ago. I know that that is not a concern most of the time so I ahve not worried about this.

Where do I go from here? Do I go see a surgeon and discuss all this with him, schedule another appointment with my doc to disuss all the questions? I am so lost and confused. I don't know where to go next. How long to expect to be down after surgery, how much help will I need past-op, etc.

Hi rockymtnbiker ,
You sound a lot like I was before my surgery. I am 38 and I had a 3rd degree prolapse, plus several other issues. My husband has been great and very supportive of the surgery. It has not been an easy recovery so far, mostly because of all the repair work I had done. I am so glad I made the decision to get the surgery and can't wait to get my life back to normal. For most people recovery is about 6 weeks, mine will be 12. Hope this is not TMI, but it is so nice to walk without something falling out of me, to be able to pee normally and most of all I can't wait to have sex without pain. And with no more periods, that will never get in the way again. Also, if you are having bladder issues, you should look for a urogynecologist in your area.

Hello! to Hyster Sisters!

I think it's very smart of you to research so you can make the best decision for your circumstances. This is a very big decision to make!

In addition to the replies you'll get from your Sisters who will share information and experiences with you, please check out the information in this link: Hysterectomy Options Checkpoint. There's a lot in there that will help you discuss your situation with your doctor. It's always a good idea to get more than one medical opinion and to carefully weigh the pros and cons of surgery and understand the possible consequences. Obviously once the surgery has been performed there's no going back.

Having a hysterectomy will take care of some problems but PMS is related to hormone levels, which are ovary related. My doctor pointed out to me that if I had PMS before my hysterectomy I would have it after as well. As it turned out, I didn't keep my ovaries and instead had to contend with finding hormone balance. That was a long and frustrating part of my journey.

We're happy to share our support, experiences and information for you to consider while making your own decision. Whatever decision you make, we will be here for you every step of the way.
