Help soothing nerve damage pain. 2wks out with complications

I had a TAH on 4-30. Dr did a vertical abdominal incision due to risk of heavy bleeding with other approaches. (I have a rare bleeding disorder) Post surgery everything seemed fine until they realized I had a ileus. Went through hell all 10 days. (that's another story) but was finally able to get my bowels moving on day 10. During all this Dr kept me on low dosing fentanyl pca so the nerve pain was masked. When I changed over to pills. I felt like in certain areas my abdomen was burning and splitting open. My doctor said it appeared that I had nerve damage from the surgery. That it can be a complication from the surgery. They continued to try and find a med that would help in relieving the pain but I became very sick with the pain meds. Projectile vomiting. So my doc has me taking phenergan with the pain meds. Still today 14 days out no pain pill will touch the nerve pain. I've been home for two days now using hot soaks and heating pad. Dr prescribed Precocet 10-325 Q6, 800mg of Ibprophen Q8. Plus a weird thing is the incision does not hurt at all. I just feel excruciating pain with movement, coughing, even blowing my nose in those few areas. If anyone knows any relief for nerve damage PLEASE let me know. Doc did say it will take longer to heal but didn't have a timeline. Thank you HysterSister!

Re: Help soothing nerve damage pain. 2wks out with complications

I had some nerve pain but not nearly as much. It drove me nuts for a few weeks but I'm glad to report it's getting better and I suspect my tolerance is increasing. Anti inflam naproxen helped the most.

Thanks for the encouragement.

Re: Help soothing nerve damage pain. 2wks out with complications

Hi mbearskin, I'm so sorry to hear you've had such a rough time of it. Dealing with pain and recovery is difficult but very important. I just want encourage you to keep working with your doctor, letting him know about your pain levels and what is working and what is not working. There are several prescription medications for long-term nerve pain, but none I know of are as powerful as fentanyl, or percoset. And many have nausea as a side effect. There are meds like Lyrica, neurontin, tramadol, but right now, it's best to let the doc handle your short-term recovery pain. Just keep him informed.
