5 days post hysterectomy feel lousy depressed

Hi ladies...I'm 5 days post TVH with A & P repair. Kept both ovaries. Everything about the surgery was textbook and I was home the next day. I've had some discomfort but not much and haven't had narcotics in over 24 hours. But I just feel lousy...achy, headache, nauseous, no appetite and depressed. Like I could cry at the littlest thing. I'd almost rather have an incision that was hurting that I could focus on instead of these vague feelings. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Has anyone else felt this way? I also have not had a BM yet. (Sorry...tmi ). Don't even feel like it's coming. I've been eating high fiber, drinking water, and started milk of magnesia yesterday. Would love to hear from those further down the road. Thanks

Re: 5 days post op feel lousy depressed

I'm 9 days post-op and day 5 was really hard for me too. I was still miserable, in pain and depressed. While I'm not much further out than you, I can say it has improved day by day for me. Hang in there. Your body is going through a ton of changes.

Re: 5 days post op feel lousy depressed

Hi Birthjoys,
I'm so sorry you feel so lousy and depressed. I know the feeling. I had my hysterectomy on the 17th and started feeling blue blue blue. I had a BM finally and must say that I felt better in many ways afterwards.
Post-surgery depression (ANY kind of surgery) is a real thing that not that many people talk about. It can be a reaction to the general anesthesia, the physical trauma, and/or many other things. It doesn't last forever. Also of course there are the hormones....
I just wanted to say this so that you know you're not alone and that there is a reason you are feeling down right now! I am too. We've all been through a lot and deserve to treat ourselves gently and with compassion. Take care.

Re: 5 days post op feel lousy depressed

I'm three weeks post op and I have to confirm it does get better. I noticed I felt lousy when I went off the narcotics, but I think that is my body trying to detox. Luckily I was only on them a day or two. Keep in mind, if you kept your ovaries you still have the joy of PMS, so perhaps that is adding to your already stressed out body and your inability to do much of anything. I tried to sit outside as much as I could and get a little sun, which helps with my mood.

Keep your chin up! It will get better soon!

Re: 5 days post op feel lousy depressed

Hey girl, the emotional ups and downs will happen. I am 16 days post-op and have days when I can conquer the world and days like today when I just want to cry and crawl back in bed. The BM's will come but don't rush it. When my first one came it was disappointing (and a bit painful) at best then the dam broke and it was back and forth to the toilet every few hours. The pain killers tend to slow down peristalsis in the colon so as you weane off them it will get better. I know it's difficult but follow the advice, take it easy. We tend to over do without even realizing it. Hang in there!

5 days post hysterectomy feel lousy depressed

Sorry to hear you're having such a rough time. The constipation, nausea and lack of appetite are most likely lingering effects of the narcotics; I stooped them on day 3, had my first bowel movement on day 6, and the nausea and lack of appetite started to dissipate after that. Instead of MOM, try eating magnesium rich foods like dark leafy greens, pumpkin seeds and dark chocolate; to directly treat the nausea, try ginger tea. The headaches and depression could be hormonal, a result of your ovaries temporarily shutting down, which is quite common following a hysterectomy; that should settle down within a few weeks. The aching is normal after surgery like this; it's a sign that you need to rest and take it easy for the next few weeks. Best wishes for your recovery!
