Because

passing gas indicates that the bowels are awake and working properly. And they won't let you go until they are sure your digestive tract is back to working order.

I was lucky, I passed gas the first evening and was able to urinate with no problems. I also had a small BM in the hospital and have had borderline diarrhea since.

Isn't it funny how priorities change at a time like that? I was so proud of myself! I wanted to hang a banner in the hall! It would have read:

Attention Everyone!! Lisa Passed Gas This Evening!

Passing Wind!!!

Hail,

The reason it's so important for the medical staff to know your are at least "farting," is because the anesthesia shuts your whole system down, thus pneumonia, bowel probs, etc... can be problem. It took me a whole week from surgery for a tummy tuck last year, to produce a bowel movement, yet I had gas and activity the whole time...shoulda' eaten more prunes.....

just have to ask...

Because the uterus and the intestines are so close together, there is always some manipulation of the bowel during surgery. The amount varies according to type of surgery, so they just have to make sure everything is in working order before they let you leave. In my case, they just listened for "rumblings" through a stethoscope. The nurse came in and listened in the middle of the night and then the doctor confirmed it before she released me the next morning. I don't remember when I actually passed gas the first time, but I think it was after I got home. My surgery was at 8:00 a.m. on a Tuesday, and I was released at 9:30 a.m. the following day.

I do strongly advise having a supply of GasX at home. They gave me some in the castle, and then I took the maximum dosage for the first 3 days at home.

Yeah!

they checked my stomach for rumblings thru stethscope, 1st day nothing 2nd day rumbling then in eve. whoa! little pass of gas.

I told them they can forget a bowel movement I'll be there for a week, sure enough 7th day at home, Wow had my 1st bm - I was set - I finally had done everything!!

1st only chips of ice, then water, then soft foods with each accomplishment - yeah!

Amazing how are priorities change
