Some questions about recovery time
Hi. I am scheduled to have a TAH on Tuesday, April 14th. I have 4 kids that I homeschool (the oldest is 12 and the youngest 5) and my MIL (mother in law) is taking them for the first week. The second week, I have help coming over most days. I guess my biggest question is "is this enough help?" I know I will need to take it easy for 6 weeks but what exactly does that mean? Can I move from my bed to the family room and sit like a directing them or will I want to be in my bed for more than the first few days? They don't need me to "do" things for them but I can't just go back and hide out in my bedroom or it will be craziness. Also, I would like to resume our normal activities after the first few weeks in terms of me driving them places but where I don't really do anything when we are there. Is this unreasonable? I have most meals taken care for the first few weeks when they are back home and I have a maid who comes every week, so I'm not really worried about things around the house. I'm really wondering what is reasonable to expect about how worn out I will be.

Re: Some questions about recovery time
Hey biffychef! I'm 6 weeks post TAH & Desert Oasis today. I have a 10year old that I also homeschool. The first week was the hardest for me. The meds made me kinda' loopy (I quit the meds as soon as I came home; however, it took a week to get them out of my system); so, I didn't get around much....and, the staples made it hard to move quickly. But, after that, I was able to move around, resume teaching, and do light house work (i.e. dishes, cooking).
The doc told me that I had to wait for 2 weeks after my staples were removed to begin driving again....BUT, I wasn't on any medication. If you're still taking the meds, my doc & nurse told me "NO DRIVING."
My restrictions were no lifting, vacuuming, biking, running, quick movements, or normal exercise.....until, I'm released by the doc.
I went to the doc today for post exam...everything seems to be healing well (stitches inside), but, he wants me to wait an additional 2 weeks before resuming the above tasks.
Now, understand, us "women" are different as well as each doctor's orders. But, I hope this gives you some insight to the future. Good Luck and take it easy afterwards. And, if you have any other questions, just ask! Have a great evening!

Re: Some questions about recovery time
Hi Biffychef. I am 4 weeks post TAH and experiencing much of the same as Wild Flower. Women are different, but having a helper the second week is a good idea. You should have a helper every day - and carefully pick where you would like to expend your energy. Plan for naps, and if you don't need them, you will be ahead. Do you have help with meals? My thoughts are with you.

Re: Some questions about recovery time
I had a tah/bso and was never really bedridden. I did have to go slow and easy and had the no heavy lifting, vacuuming, and streneous exercsie restrictions. No driving for 2 weeks or until I was not taking heavy pain meds. If you have a lounger or comfortable chair where you can sit and direct the kiddos during the day - that may work for you at 2 weeks post-op.
It sounds like you have a good support group ready
Best wishes.

Re: Some questions about recovery time
I have had a very uneventful recovery, but I have to tell you that the first two weeks, taking a shower and doing very small things wore me out completely. I agree with the other post that said you should be able to direct the kids from a comfy seat, but plan for downtime. Maybe the oldest can entertain the youngest while you get an occasional nap?
I was not released to drive until my two-week post op, and I have been driving ever since, just not really far. Weeks 3-4 are much better in terms of energy and mental clarity for me, but I still have to take care to not overdo it. When I do, I can tell quickly.
Take it slow, and take all the help you can get. You'll be back to normal before you know it.
