Surgery Pain Management Options

I had surgery on 2/26 so I wanted to share the research and pain management options that I requested from my surgeon.

I do have fibromyalgia and last two surgeries were difficult so this time I did research and asked for the following:

1. Numb the IV site
2. Request pain medication in IV before going into surgery and also more pain medication after surgery but before I wake up from anesthesia
3. Request Verse in IV which will relax me before going into surgery
4. Request nausea medication in IV and to receive a nausea patch on back of ear
5. Request numbing the surgery incision sites.
6. Request strong narcotics and not be given a Tylenol prescription to manage pain at home.

I have to say that surgey went well and that I did not throw up or feel nauseous. I went home the same day and have managed my pain at home with no issues.

I had my pain management under control except when my IV twisted and my pain medicine was not coming in so be careful not to twist it.

I was able to take out catheter same day and to help me pee I ran warm water in sink and I was also given tea which helped me go within an hour of drinking tea.

I emailed the doctor before pre-op appointment and we want over them in the day of surgery so they were in my chart and parts of my surgery orders.

I hope this helps anyone who is worried about pain management. You have the right to be proactive and request any of the above pain management options.
