Afraid of blood clots
I'm afraid of blood clots. I am day 6 post op and woke up with a mild "charlie horse" feeling in the back of my calf and am freaking out that it is a clot. I have been walking so much. I had the compression boots on for the 3 days of my hospital stay. I also peddle my feet and move them as much as possible so I am hoping it is just an ache and nothing more. I feel stupid calling my doctor because I am always so fearful!

If you think there is the slightest chance of a blood clot, you must call the doctor or visit the local ER ~ if only for peace of mind. If a blood clot is present, any delay could prove disastrous.
We have members who've experienced blood clots ~ with and without the "standard" symptoms.
I don't want to scare you, but these concerns cannot be ignored. Please seek medical advice and I hope your fears are unfounded!

Re: Afraid of blood clots
As somone who has dealt with blood clots in the past, I too agree that you should call your doctor or go to the ER.
Always better to err on the side of caution. Feel better!

Re: Afraid of blood clots
I took my first shot of an blood thinner in the hospital the day of my surgery and have had one everyday since that. They released me six days after my surgery and I was told to take them for 21 days. Maybe your doctor should have given you blood thinner following such an extensive surgery, but you may not have needed them. I would contact my doctor and just be safe, I have achy legs. Best wishes to you and have a full recovery soon.

Re: Afraid of blood clots
There are signs to watch for, but they are not always present. I had a DVT, and the only symptom I had was pain in my thigh. I never had any of the other signs of a blood clot.
As the others have said, if you suspect you may have a clot, you need immediate attention. Blood clots can be fatal. It may turn out to be nothing but it's better to err on the side of caution.

Re: Afraid of blood clots
I can't help feeling too embarrassed to call. It's been hours and I am still here so I think I need to chill. I get so afraid of things. I know that about myself and I want having this hysterectomy to be a change in my way of dealing with life, too. Stop being fearful. Stop being hyper vigilant over body sensations. I read about blood clots and they say they treat with ibuprofen so I am taking 600mg. I emailed my doctor but no word yet. WIll keep you posted. Thanks for everyone's kind words.

Re: Afraid of blood clots
Ibuprofen won't treat a blood clot. You are flitting with danger by not calling the doctor or going to the ER. If you have a clot, a piece could break off and travel to the lung. It could be fatal. Do not be tempted to rub it as you could cause the clot to move.
Go to the ER. It's either a clot or it's not. If it's not a clot, you may be embarrassed but you will have peace of mind. If it is a clot, you need to be treated right away. Please don't worry about being embarrassed. Go to the ER.
Edited to add: I ended up being admitted to the hospital. They had me on complete bedrest for the first few days so that the clot wouldn't travel.
