Suffers from depression before hyster
I am a 40 yr old who is having a hyster before the month is through (no exact date yet). My main concern is the fact that I have major depression & generalized anxiety/panic disorder, both which are being treated pretty successfully with meds and therapy. My surgery is mainly for heavy bleeding and awful pain every month, but was I hopeful some of my PMS symptoms would be lessened also if my ovaries are removed. I have PMS 2-3 weeks of every month and am miserable. It's gotten worse as I've got older.
Since I'm already dealing with deprss/ect could having my ovaries removed and the effects that come with that procedure possibly be worse than the PMS?
Does anyone have experience in a situation like this? I'm just very confused and at a loss for an answer. The hyster is definite, the ovary removal is not as of yet. Any views?

I know each person is different but I kept my ovaries and have done pretty well. Like you, I suffer from depression and anxiety. I know that if you have your ovaries removed, you will go through menopause, no doubt. It may be something that you want to discuss with your dr. My mother is going through menopause now, and its like she is pmsing 24/7. She has good moments and bad moments. I suffered from severe migraines, cramping, heavy bleeding, all of it. My symptons have improved tremendously. Maybe some of the sisters who are farther along in recovery will have some in sight for you. Good Luck!

Suffers from depression before hyster
Hi rumpelteazer!
Wow, can I relate to what you are going through! I have had more than 21yrs experience in having depression, anxiety, and OCD. I really struggled with whether or not to have my ovaries removed. My problem was fibroids causing me lots of pain, pms that made me sad, and family with a history of ovarian cancer. (not to mention the other emotional stuff listed above).
I am 43, so we are pretty close in age. I've been on meds for 13yrs for my depression etc...stuff, and have been doing pretty well also. My psychiatrist and I discussed what may happen if I had my ovaries removed (my choice). He said I could feel much better, or perhaps worse... Well, I had them out.
And I must say, I feel way better than I ever remember feeling in my whole life! Everyone is different of course, but I love the new me. Yes, I'm still on all my meds, and wouldn't consider stopping them. I've heard my DH tell others that I'm a "new woman!"
There are no guarantees with anything, especially surgery...I just wanted you to know that it isn't all horror stories for those of us suffering with other issues besides our hyst related stuff.
I wish you all the best in your decision. Please do discuss this with the dr that prescribes your depression meds.
God's blessings, LL
Oops, I forgot to mention that I am on the Climara patch for my HRT. It was put on while I was in the recovery room. I've never had a hot flash, or any other menopausal sysmptoms.

I had the same fears. I was able to keep my ovaries -yea! I have been reading some posts that say our AD meds are actually used sometimes for women who cannot take HRT because of breast cancer history or whatever. It appears the serratonin has the same effect as estrogen??? Do a search and see if anything relates to you.
As for when you are in the hospital - even though my doctor put my meds on the chart so I could continue to receive this - one med was listed in one place and not the other. My concern was going through any withdrawal symptoms during this already crazy time!! I smuggled in my own meds just in case..... when they woudl not give me one of the meds - I just smiled and said okay - and took my own. Do mention it to your doctor so they can get in straight.
Understand - regardless of your mental state - seems like a lot of us went through crying spells after the surgery. That's normal. Feeling useless and frustrated is also normal. Have someone close to you monitor your emotional side daily. You know yourself. Trust yourself!
I'm 43, had a TAH on the 1/19, on ADs and occasional anxiety meds - doing fine so far...... only used the anxiety stuff to help me sleep.
Good luck.

I also suffered from anxiety and depression before my hysto. However, I had new an different challenges after the surgery. The crying jags I get on, they are diffently caused by low estrogen. They are very different form my usual depression. So I have to keep my estrogen up to a certain level or I just start crying at everything and can't stop. I feel utterly hopeless.

Suffers from depression before hyster
I'm 41 and have suffered from depression for years. I did have the ovaries removed as there is a history of ovarian cancer in my family. After the surgery, I was very emotional and I was either crying or screaming. I have decided to go on bio-identical hormones and I have noticed a significant difference in my emotions since starting on estrogen and testosterone. The more I research, the more I'm thinking that my history of depression might have had a lot to do with hormone imbalances. There are some very good books available from the Hystersister's Store. I've read most of them and I feel much more informed about my options. I have realized that no two of us have the exact same experience. You might have no problems at all with the depression. Good luck and keep us posted.

Suffers from depression before hyster
I have alot going on in my life right now with my Mother just told she had 6 months to live. I had my ovaries removed also, and I can honestly say I am very steady now and I think I am calmer than I have ever been in my life. I think I must have had a hormonal imbalance for years and this surgery along with the HRT implant has helped me tremendously. I don't think I will ever regret having this done and at this point I consider the surgery a gift I gave myself for the future and now. PMS did all kinds of strange things to me along with having hyperthyroidism, which affects emotions and stress levels. But I think I have alleviated the symptoms not increased them by the surgery. It is a hard decision to make as every woman is different and this surgery is for many people like me and then their are other women that regret it. You alone must make the informed decision along with following your heart. hugs

ChapelGate,
I'm so sorry to hear about your Mom's illness...I lost my Mom 5 years ago to breast CA.
Give your Mum a hugh hug from me, and then wrap your arms around your shoulders and feel a squeeze from Eastern Washington USA.

Valli,
Have you had your meds adjusted after your hyster? This scares me because I suffer from the same maladies - depression/anxiety, and I attribute a lot of it to my screwed up hormones (and Husband .
I'm really hoping that after I have my surgery that I'll be able to get back on track, get motivated to DRY OUT, and hit the road running!
Please talk to your DR about adjusting your meds. You should not be going thru this...
Feel free to IM me anytime...
