Cancelled - on the day of surgery - at 4.30pm!!!

Hi all,

I am absolutely devastated.

At 4.30pm on the day of my op, after waiting at the hosp for 7 hours I was told they had run out of operating time and mine was cancelled! So after 10 weeks of waiting and stressing and all that now I have no idea when it will happen. Am waiting for a phone call from my doc's nurse to let me know. At first she said "the next clear date is August" but after I burst into tears (again) she said she would try to see what she could do. I am so upset I don't even know what to think or do.

Will let you know what happens...

Naomi.

PS/ And that means I have to do the bowel prep AGAIN!!!

Oh Naomi,

You poor thing,I am sorry this happened to you. Is it common practice that they hold people for hours waitng and then if they run out of time send them home? I guess we take things for granted in the U.S.

I hope your dr can do something for you to speed up your surgery date and you don't have to wait and be sent home again.

Well, we are here for you and we will keep you company no matter how long your time may be.

I feel so bad for you. That has got to be just awful.

I am afraid I would loose it at that point and someone would be finding an OR room and the time to do it.

Keep you chin up!

Well I didn't think it was common practice, but I do understand emergencies happen. What gets me is that rather than scheduling me for the next surgery date I get told, no way baby go back to the end of the line!! I am a public patient so I guess if I had insurance and was paying for the operation it wouldn't have happened.

It took me so long to arrange care for my son, and myself, stuff for work etc etc and I have put so many people out now because all of their time has been wasted and will need to be reorganised. I am waiting for the doctor to ring me and just about going stark raving mad waiting.

I just can't stop crying...

I know what your going through

I am soooooo sorry. I just went through the same thing. Except I got a phone call the day before. That was back on last Wednesday.
I have to start back at square one too. I feel for you. I was in the ER today and had to have two bags of fluids and morphine. Again I am soooooo sorry. Hang in there. Easier said than done. I know. My fiance now can not go see his parents this summer because he has used all his vacation time because we have to start all over again and my Dr. is 2 hours away.
I will be praying for you.

As far as I have been told there is nothing I can do, that is the price I have paid for being a public patient. My only option is to pay for it all and I just can't afford that. Have just had a call to say 9 August is the next booking unless there is a cancellation, and I can't arrange care for my son and work at short notice which is why I booked it so far in advance i the first place.

I am shattered, I don't know what to do.

I understand

One of my surgeries was cancelled about 18 hours before I was supposed to have it and that was hard enough, I am sure your situation was harder.
This could just be a total pain in the butt situation but you never know..............perhaps this was just not the day you were supposed to have this surgery for whatever reason. Sort of like the guy who misses his plane only to find out later that it crashed????
It's hard to accept these things but there MAY be a reason why it will be best in the long run. We never know.

I hope they can get you scheduled quickly and if they say August please stand up for yourself and tell them you just cannot wait that long.
Good luck!

NSW. And we are talking a really big hospital in Sydney too, which I travelled 3 hours to go to instead of sticking to my country town hospital which obviously I should have!!!

I am going to write a letter of complaint to the doctor, the hospital and anyone else I can think of.
