Removal of everything, is this normal?

Hi,

I am new here and this is my first post. Here is my history:

Several years ago, I had an intestinal blockage. During the testing, the doctor found a large (10 cm) fibroid. I had a femoral artery embolization. It shrunk the fibroid to 8 cm, but it also put me into menopause, as it also stopped the blood flow to my ovaries. Fast forward, to a month ago. I was in severe abdominal pain and the doctor sent me to the er thinking it may be appendictices. Turns out the fibroid is growing again (12 cm). Doctor says it is now time for a hysterectomy. I met with her yesterday and she told me that she wanted to take out my uterus, fallopian tubes, ovaries and cervix. Is this common to have everything removed? Thanks for the advice.

Re: Removal of everything, is this normal?

It is common but there are other options such taking the fibroid only or taking the uterus and fibroid only. . Maybe get another opinion to see if there are more options.

I think it depends upon each person's unique situation and personal preference. It is okay to ask your doc to help you understand why she is suggesting taking everything and how taking your cervix, Fallopian tubes, and ovaries can impact you. There are some pretty good articles and threads on this site. You may want to consider a second opinion as well, since this is major surgery. This doesn't mean that you do not trust your doc. It just gives you another point of view that could be the same or different. I sought a second opinion and decided to stick with my original doc. As you are doing, just gather up as much information as you can to get yourself comfortable with your decision.
