Why Lupron?

I am a 42 y/o woman who has had a tubal. I have a large fibriod impinging on my uterus. Now, I am also anemic. My mother has had fibroids before & they came back every time. She is telling the best way to get rid of them is to get a hysterectomy. . I have been fighting this thing for a year & so months & no surgery date in sight. Seems like the doctors want to do everything they can to shrink it & leave it in there. Meanwhile, I am suffering and becoming extremely confused. They want to put me on Lupron. But I have stopped bleeding. Why Lupron? Why not surgery now? Can any one help.

After hospitalization with anemia and getting 4 units of blood, I was put on Lupron for two months before surgery to see if the medication would shrink the fibroids and give my body a chance to raise the iron levels. Counter to the plan, I started my period one week after the first injection and kept bleeding until surgery -- but my iron levels did improve. About 3 weeks after surgery (LSH) I no longer felt the side effects of the Lupron. Getting the iron levels up helped me be stronger and helped recovery.

I did (3) months of lupron shots to shrink my fibroids enough for a less invasive hyst (LSH). I agree with Answerseeker and sometimes Drs prescribe lupron to help bring iron levels up before surgery...since lupron helps to stop periods.
