I Don't know how to decide whether to keep ovaries

I am scheduled for vaginal hysterectomy with bladder sling on April 2. I have 2 Dr. that say since I am 58 I should just get my ovaries out because they "aren't doing anything anyway" but I have no family history of cancer of any type, and I already have osteopenia. I am 10 years thru the change, taking hrt, but really, do I need to lose my ovaries too? I have read all the stuff about why to keep them ie; heart disease, etc. but still I don't know. How do I decide?
What did you do?

Re: I Don't know how to decide whether to keep ovaries

Here is something to consider. Even during natural menopause, the ovaries can produce trace amounts of hormones. Thus, post menopausal women can find themselves going through surgical menopause once the ovaries are removed.

Because you are in natural menopause, the trace hormones your ovaries may be producing are not likely enough to combat heart disease, bone issues, etc. But you don't necessarily have to have them removed either.

Do you have a GP? You might see if that doctor could help you with your decision.

Re: I Don't know how to decide whether to keep ovaries

Kept the one I could.

They really don't know everything that the ovaries do and how long they do it. They've just studied certain things--like estrogen and progesterone. But they keep finding out how our complex body works and communicates in ways we were unaware of. We don't have too many body parts that are truly useless. If so, we probably just haven't studied them enough!

My doc supported my wishes and added that to remove an ovary later is a much easier process than it used to be.

Everyone has their own unique situation and feelings, but I felt it was worth it to let my little ovary do what it's supposed to do as long as possible.
