A prevention question (about my daughter)
Well I hope that animated thingy works.
I love this place!! And I'm hoping you can give me some advice concerning my daughter. She is 26 years old and developmentally handicapped. She has had very heavy periods for the past several years, and has a functional ovarian cyst but no evidence so far of fibroids.
The reason I am concerned, given my current situation especially, is because fibroids seem to be common in the women in both sides of my family. I would dearly love for her to not be saddled with the same kinds of problems I and my female relatives have had.
I know there are lots of nutritional and natural approaches that can be helpful for fibroids. I read Dr. Christiane Northrup's book (I forget the name of it right now, LOL, that short term memory thing) on women's health, but her recommendations were very complex and also very pricey, what with all the supplements and alternative treatments, etc. Plus many of the suggestions she makes would not work with my daughter, since she has a hard time understanding how to be consistent on a daily basis with involved routines and is very resistant to change.
Any suggestions out there? I just can't stand to think she might end up with more troubles down the road.

I would highly recommend that you take your daughter to see YOUR doctor. YOUR doctor knows your own situation and can best advise you concerning your daughter.

A prevention question (about my daughter)
Hi Patty,
Thanks for your reply. Actually, we go to the same family practitioner, and she was the one who ordered the ultrasound when my daughter's periods started to be unusually heavy. That's when they found the functional cyst on her ovary.
I am probably just being a worry-wart. I just don't want her to go through ANY of the suffering and hassles I've experienced! I have heard and read that there are lifestyle and nutritional changes that have proven helpful in managing fibroids once you have them (none of them worked for me, unfortunately), but I don't know if there are any real preventive things anyone can do. From what I understand, nobody is even sure what causes the darn things in the first place.
I'll just keep a close watch on her and she'll keep getting her regular checkups, unless any complications arise in the future.
