Adhesions?!? Does anyone know about these, and how to prevent them during surgery?

Hi Fellow Princesses!

I found yet another concern while reading, reading, reading. At least when I can't sleep at night, I have something to do! Well, I know what causes adhesions, but does anyone know if there is a way not to get them that I should be discussing with my Doc.? My pre-op is today, and I want my Doc. to do whatever is necessary so I don't have to go through another surgery in the future, and I feel terrible for the women that are having problems with adhesions. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Adhesions?!? Does anyone know about these, and how to prevent them during surgery?

Princess Gretchen...adhesions were a big concern for me going in to surgery. Twenty plus years ago, I had my Left ovary and tube removed and there were numerous adhesions. I addressed that with my GYN. When he did my LAVH, he irrigated the areas with fluid which he said would help prevent a lot of adhesions from forming quickly. He said adhesions will always form, however, I have heard from patients of his that he has a low rate of adhesion formation with his surgeries. Good luck!

I have personal experience with adhesions that were very, very bad and so my doctor used an adhesion barrier on me. It's a fabric-like product that will dissolve over time...the doc said it doesn't work for everyone everytime, but it was worth a try. Have you had any surgeries before? I'm prone to them, but not everyone is. Not straining yourself post-op is important too--so I took it soooo easy--which I have to say makes for some long, boring, frustrating days...but well worth it if it will deter adhesion growth! Good luck!

Adhesions?!? Does anyone know about these, and how to prevent them during surgery?

Thank you Ladies for the help! I wish there was more we could do to stop the adhesions! Haven't we been through enough yet! Gosh!!! I have had a D & C (for constant bleeding - fun!) in 2000 and a laparoscopy for endometriosis in 2000 also. Last year I had a tubal, endometrial ablation (for heavy bleeding - go figure), and when they looked for endometriosis (to explain all of my pain), they couldn't find anything! So, they did a really cool MRI and found focal adenomyosis. I am just a chicken about the adhesions. I don't know if I have them, or a lot about them. I had my pre-op today, and he said that some women are more likely to get them than others. I am sorry that any of you have to put up with it!!! Who knows, maybe soon they will find a better way! Wishing you all well!!!
