Will they be able to control my pain?
I am seven days away. Nervous and scared. Anyway, I have been on hydrocodone 10 mg 2 times a day for a messed up back.
I am now worried about post op pain control. I know I have a huge tolerence to pain meds. I have had gastric by pass, so I have medication absorption issues. I brought this up to the surgeon and he really did not seem to concerned.
Also I have worries about anasthesia , this will be my 12th operation. In the fall I had an endo scope, and they had a hard time keeping me out. I kept waking up on them. Nurse told me she was nervous about how medication it took to get me to stay sedated.
Can you help me with my fears?

Will they be able to control my pain?
Will you get a chance to discuss your worries with your anaesthetist? I had a spinal injection and it was amazing - I had no pain on waking up, and then for about 12 hours after...then went on to the usual pain killers - but of course your awake then, so you can ask.
There has been lots in the news about people not going right under during ops. - if youve had this experience before, I would insist on a consultation before I was put out...
Hope this helps.

you might want to make an appt with your anesthesiologist before the day of your surgery to discuss your anethesia option. it takes a ton of meds to sedate me also and keep me sedated, but i've never had a problem with general anesthesia. hopefully you wont either.
as for your dr not acting concerned, you might want to call his office and ask for a return call because YOU are concerned and want to know what post op pain meds you will be getting. you deserve an answer...that is his job.
good luck!

Will they be able to control my pain?
I had gastric bypass in Dec. 2005 and am scheduled for TAH-BSO on April 28th. I too am concerned about post surgery medicines. I have told my surgeron, but he doesn't seem too concerned about it either. I did talk with my gastric bypass surgeon on Friday and he said that the pain pump should work fine and then any pain medicines they give me should be either liquid form or crushed. So I will have to tell them when I go for my pre-op in a couple of weeks. I am nervous about the surgery, mainly because of the gastric bypass. They can't do my surgery vaginally because my uterus is enlarged. So it will be an open incision. I just hope and pray they know what they're doing! I do trust my surgeon. He has been my gyn for 30 years!
Anyway, good luck and keep me informed how you do after surgery!
