worried about post op Pain!
hello : i wish i could post this in the post op forum so i could ask if anyone who had already had surgery is also a Chronic Pain patient and already Tolerant to pain meds ... how bad their post op pain was or is and if their regular meds managed the pain. ??
at my pre op i was told to bring my own pain medication incase i decide to spend the night. this has me sooo stressed out! i have had 6 other laps in my life and i have always had my pain managed by the hospital. i have always been given either a shot or have been hooked up to a machine where i could press a button.
i am afriad in every way. if i am fine than great i won't need the meds but if i'm not fine than what? i just suffer? my regular dose is my baseline for what i deal with on a daily basis it is Not meant for get'n hit by a truck or major surgery.
what should i do? i think i may cancle.

Re: worried about post op Pain!
I would think they meant, bring your meds to use for baseline, so they could manage your surgical pain separately. That would make the most sense to me. Its standard to medicate you for surgery and I think that's what they are prepared to do, but don't want to have to "reinvent the wheel" recreating the regime you're already on. Certainly clarify that but I think that's what they are thinking. Its important your baseline meds get on track so your surgical meds aren't playing catch up, as you say. And you probably know this but tell the anesthesiologist about your pain history so you wake up well medicated in recovery. Hope it all goes well for you.

Re: worried about post op Pain!
I have fibromyalgia, I did notice afterward maybe 1 week I had a flair up. But pain was well controlled after surgery by the hospital. They always have you bring all med's you generally take no matter what they are for. I don't think they will let you suffer don't worry they are there to make you comforable. Talk to anesthesia about your pain condition they will help alot. I had my surgery 3/25. Good luck. Sending you a big hug! Kirstin

Re: worried about post op Pain!
The Big Day is coming up fast! This Tuesday. After having a same-day hernia repair 3 years ago, and knowing how painful that was for me, I'm pretty scared. Have been taking Vicodin for most of this past year for severe back and pelvic pain. I was taking 3 per day, but went to 4 per day a month ago. I'm so worried that pain control will be difficult. I'm concerned about the length of the RALH which is planned 220 minutes without 2nd hernia repair. Not sure if I'll keep tubes and ovaries. I was told that I would be getting a "morphine spinal block" and that it would keep me comfortable for 10 to 12 hours. This will be a new procedure for me. Had all 4 of my kids naturally without any need for pain control, so have never had a spinal before. It creeps me out a little bit, but was told they'll wait and administer it while I'm still asleep.

Re: worried about post op Pain!
I am 4 years post hyster. I never had any pain at all but I am sure pain is differnt for differnt types of hysters (as you know there are many procedures). Don't be scared. If you do have any pain it will most likely be minor and only last a few days. Fear not. Fear is your worst enemy right now. Prayers and be well.
Deuteronomy 31:6 Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.”

Thank You for the encouraging words. I know He is with me, and always will be. His strength is what has got me this far. I know He won't give me more than I can bear. It's in His hands I will be.

Re: worried about post op Pain!
so let me first just admit that i have had to throw my superwoman complex out the window as this lavh recovery has left me no where near as strong as i claim to be...with that said i have read a lot of post replies about abdominal and gas pains post op and im not sure if i feel better or worse.
i am in a considerable amount of pain if i eat any kind of meal...my "bm's" are soft and im not backed up or anything like that...its almost more like the spasms i have read about it some of your posts...
i have taken to eating popcicles a lot because they are cold and are more easily digested, but goodness a girl cant live on popcicles alone...
what do you all recommend for quick relief, does heat work? i do have my electric blanket on tonight as its a cool wyoming spring evening but i was also wondering about laying either a hot water bottle or heating pad on my abdomen...(for the record im 17 days postop) but dont want to do anything that will harm my incision sites...
speaking of my incisions i also had an allergic reaction to the phlanges used during surgery so my incisions are having a hard time healing so if anyone has any suggestions for that i would appreciate those also...
i need you sisters BAD at this point, please HHHHHEEELLLLPPPP

Re: worried about post op Pain!
Hope:
Best bet is to talk to your dr & anesthesiologist. Asking for you to bring in your meds is pretty standard. Need to know what you are already on, how those affect you & what they can/cannot mix with them.
Satin:
Sorry to hear you're having such a rough time. I hear you on the superwoman thing - defniilty one of the hardest things to get over! Only thing i can suggest for meals is to eat very small amounts. I found that eating too much at one time - (even though it was less than i would have had pre-op) gave me pain.
Sending you both good wishes for a speedy recovery!

Re: worried about post op Pain!
I am sure that after your surgery they will make you comfortable (pain free) if they don't speak up and if neccessary ask to talk to a dr. Nowadays they do not want you to be in pain as you will heal better if you are not.
I am on pain medication daily for a bad back and I also worry that my pain will be hard to control. Just speak up though and let them know if you are in pain there are many different meds they can use if one is not working. Good luck I'm sure every thing will go well for you
