4 days since surgery
Hi-
On Monday, Nov. 28th I had a total abdominal hysterectomy (I had severe endiometrosis and 2 ovarian cysts plus uterine fibroids). I am now home from the hospital and have had a hard time staying on top of the pain. I am taking my pain meds every 4 hours and ibuprofen every 6. But, it is very painful getting into and out of bed. The pain is horrible and I hope it will go away soon. Has anyone had a difficult recovery? I have no energy and just am resting in bed. Any suggestions to help me get through this?
I am in my early 30's and have 3 children under age 5.
Thank you.

It gets better...
Hi Knitster...I had my TAH a few months back, and also in my 30s, with two young children at home. I must tell you that it does get better, but it is going to take a number of weeks to get to that point. I didnt do well with the ibuprofen the first two weeks - I took percocet which made me very nauseous, but was all I could do to help handle the pain. I still had pain, but it was a little more manageable w/ the meds. The most important thing to do right now is to rest. If a neighbor, relative, friends offers help with the kids - take it. I know that I did, and it made a very big difference in my recovery. You will have plenty of time later to do all the things you normally do as a busy Mom. If you do not give yourself this time now, you will have a longer recovery. I know it isnt easy. In fact, having to sit and do nothing was one of the hardest things that I have had to do in my life, and it requires patience. You are in good hands with this website. The women here, have helped me through it all. Try to take things one day at a time. The pain that you feel will change as each week goes by, and it will lessen. I never thought that mine would end, but it did. Trust me on that one. You will find yourself "starting over" with things as simple as getting up and down, and dealing with gas pains ( those will pass too!!!). Know that we are all here for you.
You were able to get through your surgery, and you will be able to get through your recovery as well. Hang in there.

Hi Knitster,
I'm sorry you are hurting so badly. If your pain medicine isn't controlling the pain I think you need to call your dr and let him/her know. They might be able to give you something else to try. Some work better than others for different individuals.
I don't know how much information your dr gave you,but there is a good article in the post op articles on
How to get out of bed. It might give you some suggestions that will help you with this so it doesn't hurt so badly.
Please do try to get some help with your little ones if you don't already have it. You are going to need time to heal without having to care for them for a while.
Rest, drink lots of water and try to walk around the house as you feel up to it. I hope you will feel better soon. Let us know how you are doing and if we can help.
's, Rita

Thank you for your help. I do need the support and am glad to find this website. The gas pains are horrible and I am bloated. I am lucky to have a laptop computer that I can use while in bed resting. I have been getting help from my church. We just moved to Michigan 4 months ago and am lucky to find the support from our church. My mom is here helping me out with the kids. I have found that just asking for help is wonderful. I plan on getting on this website daily for any help and questions I may have.

Are you using some Gasx or something for the gas? It usually will help. Getting up and moving around is important for that too.
I'm glad to hear you have your mom and church helping. It makes such a big difference if you can rest and take care of yourself.
