Re: Removed My Cervix without Asking Me

I can understand your frustration about not being told before the surgery. When my surgeon mentioned the different types of procedures between abdominal, laparoscopic, or vaginal, she did not say that doing it vaginally would require her to remove the cervix...she just suggested that vaginally was less invasive. I did not realize the difference until days before my surgery. She did not provide laparoscopic as an option, so I would either have to agree to the full abdominal incision to retain the cervix, or cancel the surgery and schedule with someone else. I did have a history a of few abnormal pap smears and years before had to have my cervix cryogenically frozen to stop a growth from advancing into cancer so I nervously agreed. My surgeon also shared with me that she had a hysterectomy and so believed in having the cervix removed that she had hers removed as well. She performed a hysterectomy on her sister, and removed hers as well. She told me that some surgeons opt to leave it because it actually makes the surgery easier for the surgeon but not necessarily better for the patient. I have talked with a few people that had their cervix removed and no one has had problems with their sex life once they got past the healing phase.

I hope you feel better about this as time goes by.

Re: Removed My Cervix without Asking Me

I can't feel any difference at all having a vaginal cuff. I don't understand what is disgusting about it? It's deep inside your body and can't be seen anyway. I'm just thrilled not to EVER have another period! My doctor told me he "might " not be able to reach my cervix to remove it and I figured he was just being lazy. I demanded that he REALLY try hard to get it out. I was so relieved when I woke up and he told me he got the cervix out too! After everything I've been through I don't want even "mini periods", not even a drop!

You had a Large 12 pound fibroid, heavy bleeding ect. It seems like your daily quality of life should greatly improve. I know that's what I'm hoping for. I don't feel any great loss for mine. I can't wait to have sex with no pain. To not have all the cramping and bleeding and be stuck at home. It is like being free. I hope you can see all these positive things for yourself. Good luck!

Hi Joanne13, just an fyi, if you had a TLH (Total Laproscopic Hysterectomy), as your surgery type and signature indicates, your cervix would have been removed (hence the term total). What you are describing - keeping your cervix - is actually a LSH (Laproscopic Supracervical Hysterectomy).

Hope everyone is having a good day and many hugs to those that aren't, you are in my thoughts!

Re: Removed My Cervix without Asking Me

If your cervix was not supposed to be removed but was there was obviously a reason why it was, the fact that you had a 12 pound fibroid may be the reason why it could have been intertwind with it. Or the surgeon thought that given your history of heavy bleeding and the fact that you could possibly still have bleeding he may have thought that removing it was best. For more clear answers i would strongly advise you ask your doctor for his explanation as to why he took it without your knowledge. Just a thought was your next of kin asked for permission to remove it?
