Thanksgiving travel? Am I too optimistic?
Hi there, oh, wiser than me sisters,
I need your advice on how realistic it would be for me to travel in a car 1 1/2 hours on Thanksgiving, celebrate dinner (me doing no cooking), stay overnight, and participate in my daugher's baby shower the next day (our first grandchild!), stay one more night (to rest) and then travel home. My surgery is Nov 7th, that gives me 2 weeks till Thanksgiving. I just need to drag myself to the home of our daughter's in-laws (actually, my DH will drive). We have a great relationship with everyone, so there's no stress there....in fact I'm sure they will MAKE me behave and rest. I'm doing nothing except getting there and being there.
But really, is this too ambitious? Will I feel miserable?
Thanks so much for your thoughts!
Karyn

Thanksgiving travel? Am I too optimistic?
HI Karyn
I had a TAH and was released to "drive" 2 weeks post op. Needless to say, I did not, I just didn't feel up to it yet.
A one and a half hour drive might be o.k., if you have a comfy vehichle were you could lay in the back seat or back area with a couple of pillows. It would be kind of difficult to sit that long with out stretching or walking.
Let us know what you decide !

Thanksgiving travel? Am I too optimistic?
Hi Karyn,
I agree with Lori, that provided the ride can be made comfortable you should be fine. I think it would be a shame to have to miss your daughters first baby shower. Just remember you are there as a guest only....nooooo helping at all!!! You can supervise from a comfy chair .
Just to be sure you should run your plans by your doctor, and see if they think all would be fine for you to make the trip that soon!
If you do go have a wonderful time, and all the best with your surgery next week!!
Hugs
Maria

Thanksgiving travel? Am I too optimistic?
Hi Karyn,
I think you should be fine as long as you DO rest and just watch without helping. My Dr is 2 1/2 hrs away so I had to ride frequently back and forth in the same day right after my surgery, but I made sure I had a tummy pillow under my seat belt and plenty of other ones in case I needed them. I also did alot of shifting around in the car. I wish I was going somewhere for Thanksgiving where I didn't have to do anything . You will have a great time! Best wishes next week!

It sounds like it's do-able to me! I agree with the others...bring your pillows, rest with your feet up as much as possible, and make sure that you are not tempted to pitch in and work...
It sounds like a lovely time. You'll be wiped, but as long as you don't spend alot of time on your feet, or bending, lifting, stretching, etc, you should be ok. Please make sure that everyone knows that you are very much a princess, and must be pampered!!!
Best of luck and congrats on the new grandchild!!

You Think YOU'RE Being Optimistic!!!
I am scheduled for a TAH/BSO on 11/15. I plan to travel for 2 hours one-way in our van for our family Thanksgiving dinner! Of course, I won't be drivng (or doing much of anything else!). I hope I'm not being overly optimistic. I plan on taking several pillows, and I'll have my trusty pain meds. My aunts have already planned when they'll force me to take a nap during the day, so I know I'll be taken care of. Wish me luck and good luck to you!

Thanks for the confidence! I promise to bring lots of pillows and to rest! I think it will be great to be waited on (instead of doing all the cooking myself!).

Also Optomistic!!!
I scheduled my TAH for 11/19, thinking that it was the week BEFORE Thanksgiving. No wonder when I asked the Dr. if I could go to my Mom's for Thanksgiving he looked at me kind of strangely. He said if I felt like it.... only a 45 minute car ride, thankfully!

Karyn,
Don't forget the pain meds either....though I wouldn't necessarily recommend taking them once you are in the car.....
I was driven around some during my first 2 weeks with a tummy pillow. Then drove just short distances afterwards.
Hopefully you are not driving....I would also stop at least once to "stretch" your legs....will help to keep you from "cramping" up and keep the circulation going.
Just take lots of pillows, rest in the comfy chair and relax. Sounds like you've got it planned out well.

Depends on what type of surgery you are having - I had a TVH 3 years ago and was back to work in 3 weeks feeling great! If you are having a vaginal, you will probably be raring to go.
Good luck on the 7th!
