Traveling Post-Op

I plan to travel by car at 6 weeks post op to visit my daughter and her newborn baby. The trip is 11 hours one way and travel days are 6 days apart. I am wondering if i will be cleared to travel that distance after SAH. Any opinions or advise?

Re: Traveling Post-Op

i think that's a long way to drive yourself. however, if you are sharing the drive, or going as a passenger, that would be better. i'm just over six-weeks, and think i could do that kind of trip -- just not alone. i'd get too tired having to be in the driving position so long. would need to break up the trip probably, if that's the case. but yes, i think you'll be okay. the important thing is to get doc's opinion and clearance, since she'll know you best with regard to your procedure and progress with healing. you'll need to be open-minded, and flexible post-op, because it's impossible to know on this side of surgery how you'll be feeling afterwards. it's so easy to overdo things when you feel better and better -- just follow doc's restrictions to make the most of your one-shot at solid healing. and if you make to see your daughter and new grandbaby, remember not to be overdoing things all week long -- of course you'll want to help, but be a good listener to your own body all the while!

best to you, and hope everything goes smoothly!

Re: Traveling Post-Op

I will be the passenger most of the time for the trip. We were thinking it might be best if on the way up, we drive 1/2 way in the evening, get a motel, and then drive the rest of the way in the morning. On the way back, we need to drive straight through Cause i want to spend all the time i can with my new grandbaby and daughter
