Cervix can fall OUT ???

Ladies,

A friend of a friend told me today NOT to keep my cervix. She said, “Another thing... after much research, don't leave just your cervix. It seems like everyone I spoke with years later had to go back into surgery to have that removed because over time it just won’t stay in place, nothing really anything to hang onto. It usually falls, yep.”

It falls out?

Hello sisters out there post-surgery a few years…is this true? This scared me half to death! PLEASE, I need input!!!

Thanks ladies

Re: Cervix can fall OUT ???

(((Lady DEL))) Well, the cervix doesn't exactly "fall out", but it can prolapse, just as one can have a vaginal vault prolapse if one doesn't have a cervix any longer. The point is, if you are prone to prolapse, and it's going to happen, whether or not you have kept your cervix is not going to change the outcome. Keeping your cervix isn't a magic ticket that exempts you from further risk of prolapse.

Think about it this way... I had my hyst for a very severe, sudden prolapse. My cervix was already sticking out of my body, and the uterus was still attached to it. If I had kept my cervix, well, there would not have been any benefit to that. My DR removed the entire uterus including cervix, then attached the ligaments that used to be attached to the uterus to the top of the vaginal vault, shortening them at the same time (since they had already loosened). It's been seven years, and my 'vault' is holding up nicely.

There is no evidence that keeping the cervix means better sexual functioning, either - except that a small percentage of women do enjoy the feeling of their partner bumping against the cervix, and they may be disappointed since that won't happen anymore. However, many more women find that sensation annoying or even painful, and those women are often relieved to find that they enjoy intercourse more without the cervix.

Talk with your DR about your personal risk of cervical cancer, as that may also affect your decision. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Re: Cervix can fall OUT ???

Linda,

Thank you SO MUCH for all the info. I haven’t had any prolapse problems before and I have had all the biopsies come back normal. I am amazed at all these questions that come up. I never realized ….this can be so scary! I'm not a drinking woman, but today made me feel like I could use a glass of wine!

Back to thinking….hmmm… LOL
