What exactly is the vaginal cuff for?

I forgot to ask my Dr this one question, what is the vaginal cuff for and what exactly does it do?

The vaginal "cuff" is the surgically closed portion of your vagina, where your uterus was before surgery. If they didn't close it off with sutures, it would just be an opening into your abdominal cavity. That would be bad because bacteria could then travel up and enter your body.

So, it's just the "end" so to speak where there used to be a throughway, although it's not the exact end of your vaginal passage.
