I am also new to this site....
I just discovered this site the other day...and spent some time reading the "Ladies in Waiting" stuff...that was great.
I am scheduled for a total abdominal hysterectomy. I will loose one ovary and maybe both. I have decided to keep my cervix based on some of the research "out there" about vaginal health and sexual pleasure. I've not had problems with my cervix since in my early twenties (I'm 41 now).
Anxiety seems to rule a lot these days...I do just want to be done with this, but I am afraid of all the changes. I am hoping that I will, eventually, have more energy and less discomfort, and the insane PMS symptoms will subside as time passes. I have felt like I'm on a roller-coaster ride for which I didn't volunteer.
Any ideas on how long post-operatively I will have to wait to take a "road trip" of a couple of days?
Also, I have been looking everywhere for the book mentioned in "Ladies in Waiting" The Woman's Guide to Hysterectomy: Expectations and Options...but I can find it nowhere...is it out of print or something? Does anyone have any great ideas on where I might get that book? I am trying to learn as much as possible to best prepare for the surgery for a speedy recovery and make life a pleasant as possible given the circumstances.
I am really enjoying what I've read...thank you!

Jan W,
Welcome to HysterSisters! We are glad that you enjoy this wonderful site.
Your doctor is who you should ask about this road trip of a couple days. Each doctor has a certain approach for each individual patient. It pretty much is determined as to how you heal and respond.
Road trips after surgery are not comfortable. Use a tummy pillow to cushion yourself between you and the seat belt. You will feel every bump in the road. My doctor did not want me riding in a car for several weeks post-op. The first few weeks I rode only in the car to make my way to post-op exams. With all of those stitches inside of you----please do not ride in vehicles unless you must. You would not want to risk being involved in an automobile accident.
Sending you a

HI!!!
Hi Jan, I just read your post, and I am almost 6 months post op, and I am also in Albuquerque!! I think you are the first sister I have met on this site from ABQ, and I just wanted to introduce myself...
My name is Ami, and I had a TAH on 11/28/00. I have been a member of hystersisters since September of 2000, and this is a great place to find friends, share ideas, fears, hints and the like. Any and all questions and concerns will be met with willing answers and compassionate words. I also have the privilage of hosting our *real time* chat on Friday nights, I would love to see you there, it a great place to *get together* with other sisters, both post op and pre op ladies come in, if you don't have AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) downloaded yet, let me know, and you could come to chat!
Where are you having your surgery done? I had mine done at Lovelace Hospital, on Gibson. Great place!! Please, please feel free to contace me via email, I would love to hear from you!
Love,
Ami

Hi Jan,
I had a TAH/BSO on 4/16/01. Dr. removed 6 large fibroids and my cervix as well. I am entering my 6th week post-op and I am feeling great!
As far as the road trip is concerned, you will need to discuss that with your doctor. I do know that my trip from the hospital was approximately 45 minutes away. That's not too long at all, and I had no problems, but my dh was extremely careful not to hit bumps if he could help it, and we went across railroad tracks very slowly.
Much of your recovery will depend on what kind of physcial shape you are in right now. Prior to my surgery, I would walk at least 2 to 3 miles each day, or as often as I could. I have had NO PROBLEMS with my recovery (thankfully!) and my dr. told me that perhaps one of the reasons I have healed so easily and quickly is because I was in fairly good shape prior to the surgery.
THROUGH THE LAND OF HYSTER is another book you can buy from this site. I did, and I learned so much from it. There is also a section in the book for the LIW's which gives great hints and suggestions as to what to expect from the surgery as well as what to take to the hospital, etc. This was my "bible" when I was going through the process.
Feel free to e-mail me directly if you want to. This site has helped me so much that if I can return the favor to anyone, I will.
from Texas

Thank You!
Thank you all for the responses...wow! I am getting a lot of information from you! I have been reading many of the posts.......Geeesh! I guess I have a lot of questions still.
Ami...good to hear of another Albuquerque-person. My surgery will be at Presbyterian downtown, near the university, as dictated by my insurance. Pres does come with mixed reviews, but the docs (I will have two) have a good reputation as surgeons (Shoden/Williams). I would love to chat, but Friday nights is usually out for me...and I don't have Instant Messanger loaded.
I think I will browse around these boards somemore and post some more questions too.
Good to hear everyones experiences,
Jan
