Told at my 8 week post op appointment that im good to bavk to work but I cannot lift anything over 5kg for the rest of my life due to yaving a pelvic floor reconstruction as well. Which now means I have to look for a new job as my whole job involves lifting as I manage a bakery. It doesnt leave me with a whole lot ov options and I need to work. Has anyone else now have tjese restrictions.

Re: Cleared for work with 5kg lifting restrictions permanently

That's horribly ironic: "You're good to go back to work, you just can't do anything once you get there." :-(

If I were you, I'd be asking for a complete copy of my surgical report and then going to see a physical therapist, preferably one who has experience in working with pelvic floor reconstruction patients. It may well be that your doc is right and you will never again be able to lift anything over 5 kg. But a second opinion wouldn't hurt, and a physical therapist would be more focused on what can be done with your muscles and tendons, while surgeons tend to be more focused on what muscles and tendons look like on an operating table.

You may not be able to continue your job at the bakery, but even for everyday purposes 5 kg is fairly restrictive. Heck, my two cats both weigh more than that!

The other thing is that since you specified the weight in kg rather than lbs, I'm wondering where you live. If you live in Canada, is there anything that EI can do for you? Or maybe CPP disability? I don't mean that as a permanent solution, I mean to get some money coming in until you find an alternate career.

Just seen that you are a fellow aussie and wanted to say Hi!! Where abouts in Aus are you?? The 5kg limit is super restrictive but just think when one door closes, just climb through a window!! All the best and take care, how are you handling this major heat wave?? I'm out west 42 degrees yesterday...... I'm struggling! xx

Re: Cleared for work with 5kg lifting restrictions permanently

Retrowoman, Sorry to hear about that bit of news about the lifting. It really does limit your activity, doesn't it? However, if you can manage a bakery you probably have some supervisory and organizational skills that are transferrable to another situation. I agree with Surprised, PT might help and it's definitely worth a try, not just for your job security but for the rest of your life. Do you have access to any vocational rehabilitation programs in your area? Might be something to look into. Whatever you do, be careful. Pelvic floor reconstruction doesn't sound like something you would want to have re-done, ouch! Hope your company cuts you some slack while you get this figured out.

Re: Cleared for work with 5kg lifting restrictions permanently

Hi moz28 im North of Brisbane we have hit 41 degrees here so it has been pretty hot looking forward to a cool spell. My big boss is going to ring my doctor and have a chat with him so hopefully we can sort something out. I dont really know if rehabilitation will help the weightrerestrictions but ill definitely look into and I do hope the fact I have been with the company 9 years does go in my favour and that I have alot of managerial skills they can help.i will however look for something less physical and see what other skills I could learn at tafe or uni. Ill keep you all posted. *
