Valacyclovir before surgery?

Hello everyone and thank you for this space!

I am scheduled for surgery this coming W and woke up today with the beginnings of a fever blister on my lip (fracking Herpes!). My doctor's office is closed for the holiday today. I am wondering if I can take my Valtrex prescription. I've searched the forums and found at least one other thread about this, but in those cases the surgeries were scheduled further into the future than mine.

I've also googled this but can't seem to find reliable information. Anyone have experience with this?

Thanks in advance for any feedback. Best and happy new year to all, Michelle

Re: Valacyclovir before surgery?

I took acyclovir before my surgery. At my one week pre-op appt I talked with my doctor about it and he said I could continue taking it until midnight the night before surgery. When I get stressed it raises its ugly head, always inside my nose.
I'd call and ask, but my to my doctor it was a non-issue. I don't think you and I are the only ones who have had this problem. I took it daily for 3 weeks before surgery to keep it at bay.
Good luck to you! Happy New Year, as well!

Re: Valacyclovir before surgery?

Thanks Taylor42! I called and spoke with the on-call doc who said the same thing you said, so I just took my pills and hope they head off the fever that usually comes with this territory. Stress and ugly head indeed! Thanks again. Forward! Michelle

Re: Valacyclovir before surgery?

I was on a double dose of Valtrex for herpetic Whitlow (that broke out following my hysterectomy) when I had to go in for an emergency surgery. The doc's in ER, the OBGYN surgeon on staff and the anasthesia man all agreed it wouldn't be a problem. The surgery went smoothly and without complication. The nurse got me my dosage the next morning. It didn't clash with the post-surgery meds either.
