Preop testing...just blood work?

Hey girls --

I went for my preop testing yesterday. The only things that I had to do were talk to my anesthes., nurse and have blood drawn. Should I have had an EKG and chest xray? How come they didn't do this? Maybe they'll do this testing before my surgery?

Thanks - Mel

I think the EKG and x-ray are based on whether your dr orders it. It probably has to do with age and medical history. My dr did not order one for my TAH/BSO.

Best of luck!

Preop testing...just blood work?

I had an EKG, blood work, and a chest x ray at my hospital before my tah/bso. However, I never spoke with an anethesiologist(sp) until the morning of my surgery. I know I had to have different preop tests at different hospitals before my laps so I guess every hospital or doctor has their own guidelines. Good luck on your surgery.

Most likey too young

Mel,
With the high cost of medicine today, EKG's are usually ordered for patients who are 40+ years young unless they have a significant cardiac history. At least that is the way it is in the hospital that I work in in SE Massachusetts. Good Luck.

All I had to do was the bloodwork also. When I mentioned needing anything else to the nurse she said that I wasn't overweight so it was not necessary. I am hoping my bloodwork is above 10 ( I am anemic). If it is not they told me today that I could not go under the anesthetic (if it is below 10. Good luck to all! Cathy

Preop testing...just blood work?

Hi, the only thing they did at my pre-op was weight and blood test. I believe it is only what the doctor orders, and your medical history.

Preop testing...just blood work?

My pre-op is supposed to consist of .. 1) Visit with my Dr.(not sure what all he will do to me) 2) Go over to the hospital and have blood drawn. That be it for moi. I asked about the chest x-rays and EKG, and my Dr. said he only orders those for patients who are over 40 or who have some type of history where it would be called for. Not to worry...
