New to site and have questions
good morning sisters,
i've been browsing this site for about a month and i've decided to reveal myself.
my tah is scheduled for 1-8-04 @1:00 p.m. and it seems like i have been waiting forever for the date to come. i started to have problems about 3 yrs ago with heavy bleeding (i was on bcp at the time) and my dr sent me for a pelvic ultrasound, which revealed that i had fibroid tumors; however i was not having any problems except for heavy bleeding, we decided to watch and wait. i continued to have pelvic ultrasounds annually. in november of this year my period was scheduled to start and i was having severe abdominal pain and constipation and suspected that i was beginning to have symptoms of the fibriods.
i went to see my ob/gyn and was advised that my fibroids had grown to be 21 cm in size and that if i was pregnant i would be half way through a pregnancy. after much consulting back a forth i have decided to have a tah.
my question is this, i'm about a size 14 and 5'8 inches tall, i carry my weight pretty well for my height; however I have this annoying pouch in my stomach (which is the tumor) and it seems to be getting bigger. does anyone know if after you have surgery the pouch goes away, or will i forever be haunted by this thing.

Hi there,
Welcome to hyster sisters, and good luck to you with your forthcoming surgery. I am 11 days post op and feeling very good. I also had a distended "pouchy" abdomen prior to surgery because of fibroids. After surgery I had a swollen belly, yet that seems to be going down a lot with each day. I think as your body heals post op that pouchiness will decrease or go away. I'm still fairly new post op but even now my belly is smaller than it was preop.
Sending good wishes your way,
Lisa

Good luck on your surgery.
Lisa....my belly is going down too. I noticed that my tummy was huge when I went in for surgery and now that I'm not swelling as bad, it's going down. Not flat (never has been), but not as big. Oh..has your incision closed all the way yet? I had DH look at mine (I think I gross him out by asking him to look) and he said that mine looks all closed up. Since the glue hasn't fallen off I'm going to ask the doc to take off the glue though. I'd much rather have him do it in case something were to pop open. LOL!

Hey Linda,
Glad to see your recovery is going well. It looks like my incision is closed up. No real pain now, just itchy !!!! Take care, buddy!
Good luck again, Tr.

Oh, it's good to hear that the belly will go down. I knew I had fibroids, but had no idea that one was 20 cm. and that my uterus weighed 800 grams!! I thought I was getting fat. I do Pilates and could not figure out why my stomach was still getting so huge when the rest of me was the same. I am 5'10" so it was easier to hide it, I guess.
How long will it be until I can do Pilates again? I know it is different with everyone, but I am hoping after 6 weeks I can get back to normal activities.

Oh man Lisa...the itching and burning seems to get worse the more I do. EEEK! I've been up and about doing things this morning and the burning hit me hard. Not to mention, for some odd reason I'm still really weak.
Juliabak..I think you'd probably be able to go back to your Pilates around 6-8 weeks. You do want to make sure you get clearance from your doctor.

I as well had a fibroid tumor on my uterus. I often complained for over a year or two that I felt like I was pregnant. I am 5'11" 145 pounds, but the "pooch" in my tummy made me feel awful. I had my surgery September 26th and my tummy is now pretty flat. I knew that the surgery did make a difference on Thanksgiving when I went to put a belt on that I had wore prior to my surgery....I pulled it to buckle it and the belt went all the way WAY past the holes. It was too big!! My Dr. told me that my uterus was 3 times its normal size when he removed it....so it will make a difference!!
