Post-op Large hematoma HELP PLEASE!!!

I am 9 weeks post-op and have a large solid pelvic hematoma, measuring over 12 x 11 x 9 cm and I am in extreme pain! I keep hearing and reading conflicting things. Some say it will re-absorb and others have told me including a Doctor that my hematoma is so large and it has already been a while with no shrinking that it is likely it will not re-absorb or it could take it over a year! I was on pain medication but decided I had been on it long enough and quit cold turkey when my last prescription ran out. Not taking pain medication has its pros but I am in pain all the time, and honestly I was tired of the doctor treating me like I was a drug addict looking for a high.

Please tell me what to do?? Do I wait it out and live with it, in pain??? I am currently looking into a consult with a new surgeon to see about having it removed. Any help anyone can offer would be great. I am really at my wits end and regretting having the hysterectomy!!!

Re: Post-op Large hematoma HELP PLEASE!!!

Hi! Personally, I would seek the advice of another doctor..why live in pain?? ! I developed a hematoma pretty much immediately after my surgery (lavh) and had to have it removed the day after I returned home from my lavh..the surgery wasn't as easy as the lavh; it took a lot out of me. I can't imagine living with the pain of a hematoma. Mine was located near my bladder and it was excrutiating pain. Good luck to you - HUGS!!!

Re: Post-op Large hematoma HELP PLEASE!!!

Thank you for your reply! I had an incision for my hysterectomy and although my hematoma was discovered while I was in the hospital they did not remove it, I guess they did not want to open me back up. My hematoma presses on my bladder also and it is awful!!! I am just ready for the pain to end!

Re: Post-op Large hematoma HELP PLEASE!!!

I had a small one that was found on day 10 and was put on pain meds and given a wait and see situation I was one of the lucky ones as it seems to have reabsorbed. If I was you I would see a different doc about it and see if they can help

Tennette -

You can do a search for other threads on hematomas.

Do not feel like this is happens only with hysterectomies, hematomas can form related to any incision or surgery.

Definitely go with the consult with the other surgeon and see what they say but surgery is sometimes the option.

Sorry to hear about your pain. I would definitely get another consult. Hopefully they can give you some options or at least help the pain. Living with this sounds horrible. Sending lots of hugs.
