Upcoming hysterectomy: Cyst?

I am having my surgery on December 29th. I'm 30 years old. They are taking my uterus, cervix, and Fallopian tubes. I had my pre-op appointment yesterday and got some somewhat shocking news. My doctor had done a trans-vaginal ultrasound at my previous appointment to make sure that my ovaries were okay. I hadn't heard from him so I assumed that they were okay. He told me yesterday that there is a problem with my left ovary. There is what appears to be a flood-filled cyst inside my ovary. He said that if it is not gone when he goes in to do the surgery, he is going to take the ovary. He said that if he has to take it, then it is not what he is thinking that it is and that more tests will have to be done. This made me extremely nervous! Has this happened to anyone else? If so, what was the outcome?

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy: Cyst?

Hi vspeerce,
While I can't say that I have the same thing, I can tell you that MY Dr. has said that due to repeated cysts and scar tissues on the ovary, they are taking the right and may need to take the left as well, they will save what they can. I understand that everyone is scare of Cancer, and they sometimes don't know until they can see it for themselves. I've got elevated blood levels that test for cancer, but I'm told that that can be due to many things, like my fibroid. I would say ASK questions, google sites like webMD and mayo clinic that are reputable and I'll be praying for you

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy: Cyst?

Hi vspeerce to HysterSisters!

I know this is all so scary to have all of this happening inside of you.

Your doctor probably thinks that your cyst is what is called a functional cyst. These come and go, and if it is a functional cyst, he expects it to be gone by the time you have your surgery. If it is still there, then it is probably not a functional cyst, and he will take it and the ovary. The cyst is then tested, like any other tissue removed from your body. This is standard. I know it is hard, but do not get ahead of your diagnosis. Take this one step at a time.

I had a very large complex ovarian cyst and numerous fibroids. I had two blood tests: my CA125 was normal, and my OVA1 was elevated. For me, there was a cancer concern, and an gyn onc did the surgery. All was tested in the OR and all was benign.

Re: Upcoming hysterectomy: Cyst?

During my first transvaginal ultrasound a hemorrhagic cyst was noted on my right ovary. The cyst was small about 2.5 cm. My Dr. advised me that these type of cysts usually go away. I had a follow-up ultrasound 3 months later and the cyst was no longer there. And 6 months later at my surgery both ovaries were fine. I hope everything works out fine for you. Hang in there.
