Uterus size question and ultrasound help

Hi

I just had a pelvic sonogram done on monday in which they found a uterine polyp and ademyosis. My doctor is away this week and I'm waiting on the office to call me back to answer my questions so I figured I would post them here for some help. here is my ultrasound results: is my uterus a normal size?? My instructions were to have a sonohystergram which I will be having in about a week or so to take a closer look at the polyp and the ademyosis. The ademyosis is what is concerning to me, do they do hysterectomy's for that? I'm 46 years old and I still get my period every month and I do have clotting issues and menstrual pains. I appreciate any help from you lovely ladies

PELVIC ULTRASOUND

CLINICAL INDICATIONS
HISTORY OF MENORRHAGIA

SCANNING TECHNIQUE
TRANSVAGINAL

UTERUS
An anteverted uterus is visualized measuring 96 x 50 x 57mm.

The myometrium has a heterogeneous appearance with shadowing and a bulky
anterior myometrium, suggesting possible adenomyosis.

The endometrial lining measures 6.0mm.

A 17 x 8 x 11 mm echogenic mass is visualized within the endometrial
cavity. This most likely represents an endometrial polyp.

OVARIES
The right ovary is sonographically normal measuring 22 x 14 x 23mm.

The left ovary is sonographically normal measuring 20 x 15 x 18mm.

CUL-DE-SAC

A preliminary report was previously generated.

Re: Uterus size question and ultrasound help

I researched adeno quite a bit when my docs suspected I had it. A hysterectomy is the only "cure" for adeno. HOWEVER, many women have adeno & don't even know it because they don't experience any of the symptoms. ALSO, docs like to try and see if birth control pills will control your symptoms of adeno, because adeno is estrogen dependent. If birth control doesn't work, the next common step is to try an IUD. For adeno, an IUD generally slows or stops the bleeding but has no effect on adeno pain if you have that. If the IUD doesn't work, then it is common for docs to try depo-provera and then Lupron.

I did all of these, none worked, so had a hysterectomy. The pathology report found no adeno in my uterus Through research I learned that women still could have adeno and not have it detected in pathology b/c they take a few samples of the uterus rather than testing the whole uterus due to the time and expense if they had to test the whole thing. Either way...my uterus is gone now, but so is my debilitating pain

The big idea to walk away with here is that although a hysterectomy cures adenomyosis, there are alternative treatments that help many women that want to avoid a hysterectomy...I just wasn't one of them.

Good luck, dear

Re: Uterus size question and ultrasound help

Thank you so much for your reply and knowledge! I'm sorry to hear about the hysterectomy but it seems to have helped you! I am scheduled to have a sonohystergram done soon so they can look at the polyp along with the adenomyosis, and then we will look at a treatment plan.

Re: Uterus size question and ultrasound help

You might ask to have an MRI. I was told by my gyn that adeno cannot be reliably diagnosed with an ultrasound, but that MRI gives a much better image.

Good luck!
